A Quick Overview of Kubota's RTV Models

The RTV series is Kubota’s foray into the utility vehicle (UTV) market, bringing over proven technology from their legendary line of commercial tractors and farm equipment. All but one of their RTV-series models come with the same hydrostatic transmissions as found on Kubota tractors, which improves safety and efficiency when hauling loads over uneven terrain. Where a traditional ATV or pickup truck would tend to accelerate when going downhill, a Kubota RTV with a hydrostatic transmission will maintain a constant speed as determined by the driver stepping on the gas pedal. When going uphill, where a traditional ATV or pickup truck might require revving the gas or backing up and getting a running start, a Kubota RTV will just climb the hill naturally and smoothly. When the driver releases their foot from the gas pedal, regardless of whether they are travelling uphill, downhill, or over flat ground, the hydrostatic transmission will almost immediately bring the vehicle to a complete stop. At Sun Coast Cycle Sports we offer a large selection of used Kubota RTV parts.

Kubota RTV500/RTV400Ci

The RTV500 is Kubota’s entry-level UTV model. Unlike the rest of the RTV lineup, the RTV500 is only available with a gasoline-powered, 16-horsepower Subaru electric fuel injection (EFI) engine. However, Kubota gives customers the option of purchasing the RTV500 with either a hydrostatic transmission, or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for a smoother, more intuitive ride that handles like a traditional four-wheeler. Kubota has engineered the CVT transmission to behave a little more like a hydrostatic transmission when driving downhill, to prevent the vehicle from rolling too fast due to gravity. The CVT version is branded as the RTV400Ci, although in every other respect aside from the powertrain, it is identical to the RTV500. The RTV500 and RTV400Ci are both equipped with an open-air, doorless cab with a bench seat that seats three people, including the driver. In the rear of the vehicle is an open cargo bed, which can be dumped manually with little effort. Both the RTV500 and RTV400Ci feature a solid rear axle, instead of the independent suspension found on the more advanced RTV models.

Kubota RTVX900

The Kubota RTVX900 is the new-and-improved version of Kubota’s RTV900 model UTV. The biggest difference between the 900 and the X900 is what’s under the hood, literally: the RTVX900 provides owners with easy and direct access to the radiator, air filter, and brake fluid reservoir, all located right under the hood as opposed to under the front seat as was the case with the RTV900. The X900 also features a wider cargo bed than its predecessor, which can be dumped manually.

The RTVX900 also features power steering and independent front and rear suspension, unlike the RTV500 and RTV400Ci. The RTVX900 also comes standard with a 3-cylinder 21 horsepower Kubota diesel engine with a two-speed hydrostatic transmission and four wheel drive. The dashboard is car-like and comes with an electric instrument panel, and dash-mounted shifter and parking brake. Customers also have the option to include side doors for a fully-enclosed cab, and heat and a radio.

Kubota RTV1100

The Kubota RTV1100 is the RTV series’ flagship model, boasting features more commonly seen on cars and tractors than on UTVs and ATVs. Like its predecessors, the RTV1100 comes standard with four-wheel drive and independent front and rear suspension, and a

For example, the RTV1100 has a fully-enclosed unibody cab, fully integrated into the vehicle’s chassis from the ground up, not bolted onto a generic chassis like most UTVs on the market today. This unibody construction gives the RTV1100 a much smoother ride, and offers more protection for the occupants in the event of a rollover or a crash. The RTV1100 also features a car-like dashboard, complete with air conditioning, heat, and a digital display panel.

Underneath, the RTV1100 is equipped with a hydrostatic transmission, similar to those found on lawn mowers and tractors, giving the driver better control of the vehicle when descending slopes and towing heavy loads. One drawback of the hydrostatic transmission, however, is that the vehicle comes to an abrupt stop when the operator releases their foot from the gas pedal, which some unfamiliar drivers may find jarring and uncomfortable. Kubota rectified this by designing its newest line of UTV transmissions to come to a gradual stop after the gas pedal is disengaged.

The Kubota RTV1140 is a long-wheelbase version of the RTV1100 that includes four doors and an additional row of two bucket seats. Behind the cab is an open cargo bed, which can be extended by folding up the second row seats and moving the tailgate forward. The walls of the bed also extend forward. Due to the design of the extendable bed, the cab of the RTV1140 is not fully enclosed like on the RTV1100.

The RTV1140 still comes with the same features as the RTV1100 such as a car-like dashboard with air conditioning and heat, and is powered by a diesel engine joined to a hydrostatic transmission.
