The Buell XB series, stemming from the Harley Sportster powertrain, was designed with minimal Buell input. Despite plans for a turbocharger and a subsequent in-house attempt by Harley-Davidson to boost horsepower, costs exceeded targets, leading to a price increase from $7,995 to $9,995 before launch. The XB frame debuted in the 2002 Firebolt XB9R sportbike, followed by the Firebolt XB12R in 2004, both featuring engines with displacements of 984 cc and 1,203 cc, respectively. The Ulysses XB12X, introduced in 2005, was tailored for rough roads and marketed as "the world's first adventure sportbike."
