Growing up, (we're talking 90's and early 2000's here) the only motorcycle I thought existed was Harley Davidson. It was the only brand anyone talked about, and if you even mentioned an overseas brand, people would scoff and turn you into the village idiot faster than you could finish your sentence. As I got older, and graduated, and the online market expended ten fold, there has been a drastic switch in the norm.
If you saw our list of the Top Ten Motorcycle Brands of 2020, you know that two things happened from that list. The first is, Harley Davidson isn't the top dog anymore. In fact, it ranked 8th. Oh how the mighty have fallen. There is a lot more competition nowadays, and Harley is going to have to change to keep up. The other thing you might notice, is that Honda took our number one spot. Honda almost scored perfect in every category, and their sales numbers are by far the best worldwide.
Honda has slowly grown their empire over the last ten years to move into prestigious territory. Their cars are now viewed as some of the most dependable, and they make everything from lawn mowers to backup generators. Heck, even the Honda Talon Side by Side is getting a huge following in a short amount of time. The area they have made the best splash in though, is their motorcycles. They are number one in the world, and they aren't moving away from that spot anytime soon.
For 2020, Honda sales revenue was 40% of the ENTIRE MOTORCYCLE MARKET WORLDWIDE. Read that again. It's ridiculous. 30% of motorcycles purchased worldwide are a Honda. Which means that in an extremely crowded market, Honda is the clear runaway king. Honda is dominating worldwide with their sales, that much is obvious, but why are so many people jumping on this bandwagon so fast?
Let's start at the basics here, which Honda has covered. They make an extremely dependable bike, that rarely has any mechanical issues and always comes with a trusted warranty. (3 years) Honda also breathes variety. Honda makes over 20 models of motorcycles for 2020 alone. From top of the line touring cruisers, the best dirt bike in the industry, scooters, lowriders, and anything else you could possibly think of, Honda has it covered. Whether your budget is 2000 dollars, ( Honda Scooter, or a Grom) or 25,000 for your dream bike (Goldwing), Honda has a bike for literally every single price point. The attention to detail in their lineup is nothing short of spectacular.
The other thing that Honda is doing well, is innovation. The designs of some of their most popular models continue to get makeovers into the new era. The Rebel? It's sexy as hell. The Goldwing? A once laughed at "old man bike" now looks like something out of a sci fi movie, and is very reasonably priced. The Grom gets 125 MPG, and the Africa Twin looks like something I could ride in the Sahara for weeks on end and never get bored. I could go on and on, but my point is this; Honda's design team is absolutely crushing it in every single model. Nothing is overlooked.
With Honda having the best variety, design, and dependability, it will be a number of years before another motorcycle brand even has an opportunity to attempt to overtake them. My prediction is this, I don't see anyone knocking off Honda for the next ten years, minimum. Honda has built an empire, and aren't going anywhere soon.
