Used XR1200 Parts

The Harley-Davidson XR1200 was a sport-oriented Sportster produced from 2008 to 2012 (2009-2012 in the US market, 2008 in Europe). It used the standard 1,202cc air-cooled Evolution V-twin but with performance upgrades: revised camshafts, a freer-flowing intake and exhaust, and increased compression producing approximately 91 hp. The XR1200 also received upgraded suspension, Brembo front brakes, and an aluminum swingarm unique to this model. Sun Coast stocks XR1200 parts from donor bikes processed at our Florida facility, each component photographed and cataloged under a unique SKU.

The XR1200 is built on the standard Sportster frame with modifications. The engine is the 1,202cc Evolution V-twin found in the XL1200 family, but with XR-specific camshafts, intake, exhaust, and a higher 10.0:1 compression ratio. Because the bottom end is the standard Sportster 1200 engine, many internal engine parts (crankshaft, transmission gears, primary drive) interchange with other 2004-2020 XL1200 Sportsters. However, the XR-specific components (cams, exhaust, intake, ECU calibration) are unique and significantly more valuable. The aluminum swingarm is XR1200-specific and does not appear on any other Sportster model. The Brembo front brake calipers and rotors are XR-specific mounting, not found on standard Sportsters. The XR1200X (2010+) upgraded the front suspension to an adjustable cartridge-style fork and added fully adjustable piggyback rear shocks, making the XR1200X front end components incompatible with the base XR1200. Standard Sportster bodywork (tanks, fenders, side covers) does not fit the XR1200 due to different tank shape and rear fender/subframe configuration.

Common XR1200 failure points and replacement parts

Exhaust header cracking: The XR1200's unique exhaust header routing, which runs under the engine in a Buell XB-inspired layout, is prone to cracking at the header-to-collector junction. Heat cycling and vibration accelerate this. Replacement exhaust headers in good condition are highly sought-after because the XR1200 exhaust is model-specific and no longer in production.

Voltage regulator (all years): The XR1200 shares the standard Sportster charging system, which uses a regulator/rectifier known to run hot and fail. Symptoms include a dead battery, inconsistent voltage output, and dimming lights. MOSFET-type aftermarket regulators are a common upgrade.

Rear shock preload adjustment (base XR1200): The base XR1200 (non-X) rear shocks have preload adjustment that can seize from corrosion or lack of use, particularly on bikes that sat in humid climates. The piggyback shocks on the XR1200X are less prone to this issue due to their higher-quality construction.

Commonly replaced XR1200 parts

  • Exhaust headers and muffler
  • Voltage regulator/rectifier
  • Brake pads and rotors (Brembo)
  • Aluminum swingarm (if damaged)
  • Suspension components (fork cartridges, rear shocks)
  • XR-specific camshafts and intake
  • Bodywork and tank
  • Mirrors, levers, and controls

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will standard Sportster XL1200 parts fit an XR1200?

Internal engine components like the crankshaft, transmission gears, and primary drive are shared with the 2004+ XL1200 Sportster family. However, the XR1200 uses unique camshafts, intake, exhaust, ECU mapping, aluminum swingarm, Brembo brakes, and different bodywork. Standard Sportster tanks, fenders, seats, and exhaust systems do not fit the XR1200 without significant modification.

Q: What changed between the XR1200 and XR1200X?

The XR1200X received a significantly upgraded suspension: adjustable cartridge-style front fork internals (replacing the non-adjustable fork on the base model) and fully adjustable piggyback rear shocks. It also standardized mid-mount foot controls. The engine, frame, bodywork, and brakes remained the same. The front fork components are not interchangeable between the base and X models due to different internal cartridge assemblies.
