Sun Coast Cycle Sports stocks inspected used parts for the 2005-2008 BMW R1200ST, the sport-touring member of the Hexhead R1200 family. The R1200ST replaced the R1150RS and was essentially a lighter, sportier version of the R1200RT, with clip-on handlebars, a smaller half-fairing, and 24 kg less weight than its touring sibling. Despite sharing the same Hexhead 1170cc boxer engine, six-speed gearbox, and shaft drive as the RT, the ST offered a notably more sporty riding position and quicker handling. Produced for only three model years before being discontinued, the R1200ST is one of the rarer Hexhead R1200 models. Every component from our R1200ST donors is evaluated at our Florida facility, photographed under a unique SKU, and shipped free across the continental United States.
R1200ST generation and parts compatibility
| Years | Engine | Power | Key Features |
| 2005-2006 | 1170cc air/oil-cooled boxer (Hexhead), SOHC | 110 hp | Servo-assisted Integral ABS; clip-on handlebars; lighter fairing than RT |
| 2007-2008 | 1170cc air/oil-cooled boxer (Hexhead), SOHC | 110 hp | Non-servo ABS II (lighter, simpler); otherwise unchanged |
The R1200ST shares its Hexhead engine with every other R1200 model of the same era: the R1200GS (2004-2009), R1200RT (2005-2009), R1200R (2006-2009), and R1200S (2006-2008). All Hexhead engine internals interchange across these models. The ST's engine tune is identical to the RT's, with the same 110 hp output, compression ratio, and cam timing. The two models differ only in chassis, bodywork, and ergonomics.
The Telelever front suspension and Paralever rear swingarm are shared across Hexhead R1200 models, though suspension settings (spring rates, damping) are tuned differently for the ST's sport-touring intent. The shaft drive final drive unit is the same across all Hexhead R1200 models and is subject to the same maintenance requirements and known vulnerabilities.
The R1200ST's short production run (2005-2008) and moderate sales volume make model-specific parts (clip-on handlebars, sport-touring fairing, specific seat) harder to source than parts for the high-volume GS and RT. Shared Hexhead engine components, final drive, and suspension parts are readily available from other R1200 donors.
The R1200ST was replaced conceptually by the R1200RS when it was revived in 2015, though the RS uses the Wethead liquid-cooled engine in a different chassis. No parts from the 2015+ R1200RS fit the Hexhead R1200ST.
Common R1200ST failure points and replacement parts
Final drive bearing failure: The same shaft-drive final drive vulnerability as all Hexhead R1200 models. Early models (2005-2006) shipped with final drive oil specified as lifetime fill, which proved inadequate. BMW mandated 12,000-mile oil changes and revised the bearing design for later production. Regular final drive oil changes and periodic driveshaft spline lubrication are critical preventive maintenance.
Servo brake complexity (2005-2006): The servo-assisted Integral ABS on 2005-2006 models is expensive to service and parts are increasingly scarce. The 2007+ non-servo ABS II system is simpler and more reliable. Many ST buyers specifically seek 2007-2008 models to avoid servo brake maintenance costs.
Fuel level sensor failure (Hexhead): The fuel level sensor (fuel strip) inside the tank can fail, causing inaccurate fuel gauge readings or a non-functional gauge. This is a documented issue across all Hexhead R1200 models.
Fuel pump controller issues (Hexhead): The fuel pump controller can develop intermittent faults that cause hard starting or stalling. Replacement resolves the issue, though diagnosis can be frustrating due to the intermittent nature of the failure.
Wind protection limitations: Despite being a sport tourer, the R1200ST's smaller fairing provides less wind protection than the RT, particularly for taller riders. Aftermarket taller windscreens are a popular upgrade for riders who use the ST for longer distances.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Will R1200GS or RT engine parts fit my R1200ST?
Yes. The R1200ST shares its Hexhead engine with all R1200 models from 2004-2009. Engine internals, gearbox, clutch, and shaft drive components interchange directly. The GS and RT are the highest-production Hexhead models and the best donor sources for ST engine parts.
Q: What is the difference between the R1200ST and R1200RT?
The engine, gearbox, shaft drive, Telelever front suspension, and Paralever rear are shared between the two. The ST has clip-on handlebars (sportier, lower riding position), a smaller and lighter fairing, no electrically adjustable windscreen, and weighs approximately 24 kg less than the RT. The RT has a full touring fairing, electrically adjustable screen, and more touring-oriented ergonomics. Many chassis parts cross over between the two models.
Q: Why was the R1200ST discontinued?
BMW discontinued the R1200ST after 2008 due to modest sales against strong competition from the Triumph Sprint ST and Honda VFR800. The sport-touring segment was well served by the more popular R1200RT, and the sportier R1200S covered the performance end of the boxer lineup. The ST's niche between these two models did not generate sufficient sales to continue. The RS designation was later revived in 2015 with a liquid-cooled Wethead engine.
