Used 03-09 VFR800 Parts

Used parts for the 2002-2009 Honda VFR800 VTEC Interceptor (6th generation) are available at Sun Coast Cycle Sports. This complete redesign introduced Honda's VTEC variable valve actuation to the VFR platform, operating only two of four valves per cylinder below approximately 6,800 RPM and engaging all four above that threshold. The 781cc V4 switched from gear-driven to chain-driven camshafts, and the chassis received underseat dual exhausts, optional ABS with Honda's Combined Brake System (CBS), and optional hard luggage. Output is approximately 107-110 horsepower. Parts are inspected, photographed, and ship from our Odessa, Florida facility.

03-09 VFR800 VTEC generation and parts compatibility

PeriodYearsEngineKey details
6th Gen (early VTEC)2002-2005781cc V4, PGM-FI, VTECChain-driven cams, VTEC at ~6,800 RPM, underseat exhausts, CBS linked brakes
6th Gen (revised VTEC)2006-2009781cc V4, PGM-FI, VTECVTEC threshold lowered to ~6,400 RPM, remapped ECU, white tach face, electrical fixes

Most components interchange across 2002-2009. The 2006 update lowered the VTEC engagement RPM, remapped the ECU for smoother transition, changed the tach face from black to white, added clear turn signal lenses, and upgraded wiring to address charging system issues. Bodywork, frame, wheels, and brakes are common across all years. Engine internals are shared throughout, with the ECU mapping being the primary difference between early and late VTEC models.

This generation shares NO parts with the preceding 5th-gen VFR800 (1998-2001) or the successor 8th-gen VFR800F (2014+). Each represents a distinct platform with different chassis and engine configurations.

Common 03-09 VFR800 VTEC failure points and replacement parts

VTEC transition jerkiness (2002-2005): The most discussed characteristic of this generation. The transition from 2-valve to 4-valve mode produces a noticeable and sometimes jarring surge in power. The 2006+ ECU remap improved this significantly by lowering the engagement threshold and smoothing the transition curve. Aftermarket ECU flashes can further smooth VTEC behavior on pre-2006 models.

Rectifier/regulator: Charging system failures remain a persistent VFR issue. The 2006 update addressed some wiring concerns, but the regulator/rectifier itself remains a failure-prone component. MOSFET aftermarket replacements are essential preventive maintenance.

Cam chain tensioner: With the switch from gear-driven to chain-driven cams, cam chain tensioner wear becomes a maintenance item. The automatic hydraulic tensioner can develop cold-start rattle, and replacement is recommended at higher mileages to prevent timing chain skip.

Underseat exhaust heat: The dual underseat exhausts concentrate heat around the tail section and passenger seat area. Plastic discoloration, degraded seat foam, and hot running under the seat are common complaints. Replacement tail sections and heat shields are frequently sought.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I use 1998-2001 VFR800 parts on a 2002-2009 VTEC model?

No. The 2002 VTEC VFR was a complete redesign. The engine switched from gear-driven to chain-driven cams and added VTEC valve actuation. The chassis added underseat exhausts and different frame geometry. No major components interchange between the two generations.

Q: Is the 2006+ VTEC really better than the 2002-2005?

The 2006 ECU remap significantly improved VTEC transition smoothness by lowering the engagement threshold from 6,800 to 6,400 RPM and refining the transition curve. Most riders consider 2006+ models noticeably smoother in daily riding. The earlier models can be improved with aftermarket ECU tunes.
