Used Ninja 500 Parts

Used parts for the Kawasaki Ninja 500 (also sold as the Ninja 500R, EX500, and GPZ500S internationally) are available at Sun Coast Cycle Sports. Produced from 1987 to 2009, the Ninja 500 uses a 498cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel-twin engine with carburetors (1987-2009, never fuel-injected) and a six-speed transmission. Positioned between the Ninja 250 and the 600cc sportbikes, the Ninja 500 served as a capable mid-displacement commuter and beginner-friendly sportbike for over two decades. Every component is inspected, photographed, and ships from our Odessa, Florida facility.

Ninja 500 generation and parts compatibility

PeriodYearsEngineKey details
EX500A (Gen 1)1987-1993498cc parallel-twin, carburetedOriginal design, round headlight integrated with fairing
EX500D (Gen 2)1994-2009498cc parallel-twin, carburetedRevised bodywork, twin headlights, same engine core, minor chassis updates

Engine internals are shared across the entire 1987-2009 production run. The 1994 bodywork revision is the primary break point: Gen 1 (1987-1993) and Gen 2 (1994-2009) fairings and some external components do not interchange. Frame, wheels, brakes, and most chassis parts are compatible across both generations with some modifications. The Ninja 500 was never fuel-injected throughout its entire production run, retaining carburetors even in its final 2009 model year.

The Ninja 500 was replaced in Kawasaki's lineup by the Ninja 650R (2006+), which uses a completely different 649cc parallel-twin with fuel injection. The two platforms share no parts.

Common Ninja 500 failure points and replacement parts

Carburetor maintenance: As a carbureted bike produced well into the fuel-injection era, carburetor upkeep is the Ninja 500's primary service concern. Pilot jet clogging, float valve deterioration, and rubber diaphragm degradation are standard age-related issues. Regular carb synchronization keeps the parallel-twin running smoothly.

Petcock failure: The vacuum-operated petcock is a known failure item. A leaking petcock diaphragm can allow fuel to bypass into the engine via the vacuum line. Replacement or rebuild is straightforward maintenance.

Stator and charging system: The stator and rectifier/regulator can fail, particularly on higher-mileage bikes or those with added electrical accessories. Voltage testing at idle is a useful pre-purchase diagnostic.

Suspension limitations: The OEM suspension is soft and suited for commuting rather than spirited riding. Fork spring upgrades and aftermarket rear shocks are common improvements for riders who want sharper handling.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will Gen 1 (1987-1993) engine parts fit a Gen 2 (1994-2009) Ninja 500?

Yes, for most engine internals. The 498cc parallel-twin engine core remained consistent across the entire 22-year production run. Pistons, crankshaft, transmission gears, and clutch components are interchangeable. Bodywork and some external engine covers differ between Gen 1 and Gen 2 due to the fairing redesign.

Q: Is the Ninja 500 related to the Ninja 650R?

No. The Ninja 500 (EX500) uses a 498cc carbureted parallel-twin, while the Ninja 650R uses a 649cc fuel-injected parallel-twin in a completely different frame. The two share no parts despite both being middleweight Kawasaki parallel twins. The Ninja 650R replaced the 500 in Kawasaki's lineup starting in 2006.

Q: Was the Ninja 500 ever fuel injected?

No. The Ninja 500 retained carburetors throughout its entire 1987-2009 production run, making it one of the last carbureted sportbikes in the Kawasaki lineup. This means carburetor maintenance is a regular service requirement, but the upside is a simple, reliable fuel delivery system with no ECU or fuel injection components to fail.
