Used VT700 Parts

Sun Coast Cycle Sports carries inspected used parts for the Honda VT700C Shadow, manufactured from 1984 through 1987 for the US market. Powered by a 694cc liquid-cooled SOHC V-twin with a six-speed transmission and shaft final drive, the VT700C was Honda's response to the 1983 tariff on imported Japanese motorcycles over 700cc. This is mechanically a sleeved-down version of the original 1983 VT750C Shadow, created solely to meet US import regulations. Each VT700 component we sell is cataloged with its own SKU, photographed from multiple angles, and ships directly from our Florida warehouse.

VT700C generation and parts compatibility

GenerationYearsEngineKey differences
Early1984-1985694cc V-twin, 45-degree, dual 36mm carbsDual front disc brakes, ten-spoke cast wheels, chrome front fender, painted side covers, more standard riding position
Late1986-1987694cc V-twin, 45-degree, dual 36mm carbsSingle front disc, five-spoke cast wheels, lower seat, longer wheelbase, painted front fender, chrome side covers, new camshaft profile

The 694cc RC14E-derived engine is mechanically consistent across all four model years. Pistons, connecting rods, valve train components, and most engine internals interchange freely between 1984-1987 bikes. The 1986 redesign changed the frame geometry significantly: the seat was lowered, the wheelbase stretched, and the rake and trail increased to give the bike a more pronounced cruiser stance. This means frames, swingarms, and most bodywork are NOT compatible between 1984-1985 and 1986-1987 models. The 1986-1987 models also switched from dual front disc brakes to a single disc, so front brake calipers and rotors do not cross over.

The VT700C is closely related to the 1983 VT750C (sold in the US for one year only) and the 1988 VT800C. The VT750C and VT700C share the same basic engine architecture with different bore dimensions. The 1986-1987 VT700C frame and styling are very similar to the 1988 VT800C, and some chassis components interchange between these models, though the VT800C uses a four-speed transmission versus the VT700C's six-speed. The VT700C uses shaft drive across all years. Canadian and European markets received the full 750cc version (VT750C) throughout this period.

Common VT700C failure points and replacement parts

Hydraulic valve adjusters: The VT700C uses hydraulic valve adjusters that eliminate routine valve clearance checks. Over time and high mileage, these adjusters can become noisy or fail to maintain proper clearance, causing ticking sounds and reduced performance. Replacement adjusters are a common service item on bikes with 30,000+ miles.

Stator and charging system: Like most Shadows of this era, the VT700C's stator and regulator/rectifier can fail with age. Symptoms include a battery that won't hold charge, dimming headlight at idle, and eventual no-start conditions. The stator connector is a common failure point before the stator itself goes bad.

Shaft drive seal leaks: The VT700C's shaft final drive uses seals at the output and rear hub that can weep oil after decades of service. Small leaks are cosmetic, but a significant leak indicates the seals need replacement before the drive internals are damaged.

Carburetor diaphragms: On bikes that have sat for extended periods, the slide diaphragms in the 36mm CV carburetors can crack or become stiff. This causes poor throttle response and flat spots during acceleration. Replacement diaphragms and rebuild kits remain available in the aftermarket.

Commonly replaced VT700C parts

  • Stator and regulator/rectifier
  • Carburetor rebuild kits and slide diaphragms
  • Hydraulic valve adjusters
  • Shaft drive seals
  • Brake pads and rotors (single disc 1986-1987, dual disc 1984-1985)
  • Exhaust system and mufflers
  • Speedometer cable and instrument cluster
  • Seat and backrest assemblies

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will VT750C parts fit a VT700C

Engine internals are closely related since the VT700C is essentially a sleeved-down VT750C, but bore dimensions differ (76.5mm on the 700 vs 79.5mm on the 750). Pistons and cylinders do not interchange directly. Frame and bodywork from the 1983 VT750C can fit 1984-1985 VT700C models in many cases, as the two share the same basic chassis design. The 1986-1987 VT700C was redesigned and is closer to the 1988 VT800C in frame geometry.

Q: Are 1984-1985 and 1986-1987 VT700C parts interchangeable

Engine internals, transmission, and shaft drive components are largely shared across all four years. However, the frame, bodywork, wheels, front brake system, handlebars, and most cosmetic parts changed significantly for 1986. Treat these as two distinct sub-generations when ordering body panels, brake components, or chassis parts.

Q: Why is the VT700C called a tariff buster

In 1983, the US imposed tariffs on imported Japanese motorcycles with engines over 700cc to protect Harley-Davidson. Honda responded by sleeving the 750cc engine down to 694cc and selling it as the VT700C exclusively in the American market. Canada and other markets continued to receive the full 750cc version. The tariff was lifted in 1985, but Honda kept the 700cc designation through 1987 before replacing it with the VT800C in 1988.
