Used S2 / S3 Parts

Browse used OEM parts for the Buell S2 and S3 Thunderbolt at Sun Coast Cycle Sports. The S2 (1994-1996) launched the Thunderbolt name as Buell's first true sport-touring platform, while the S3 (1997-2002) refined the concept with improved power and chassis components. Both use the Harley Sportster-derived 1,203cc air-cooled V-twin in a tubular CrMo steel frame with half fairing for wind protection. The S2T and S3T touring variants added hard saddlebags and lower fairings. All parts are verified, individually cataloged, and ship from our Florida facility.

The S2 and S3 are closely related but not identical. The S3 refined the S2's chassis with improvements to suspension, brakes, and ergonomics. Within each model, the standard and T (touring) variants share all mechanical components with the T adding bodywork extensions and luggage. The 1999 update to the S3 brought Thunderstorm heads, EFI, cast aluminum swingarm, Showa suspension, and Nissin brakes, making the 1999+ S3 substantially different from earlier models in these areas.

The S3 shares its tube-frame architecture with the S1 Lightning, M2 Cyclone, and X1 Lightning. Engine and many chassis components interchange across the tube-frame Buell family, particularly between models of the same engine specification era (pre-1999 carbureted or 1999+ EFI with Thunderstorm heads).

Common S2/S3 Thunderbolt failure points and replacement parts

Cam chain tensioner shoes: Standard Sportster engine wear item. Progressive wear can lead to timing issues if not addressed.

Rocker box gasket leaks: Oil seepage at the rocker box gaskets is a common Sportster engine characteristic.

Rear brake line chafing (NHTSA recall): 1996-1999 S3 and S3T models were included in a recall for rear brake line chafing that could lead to brake fluid leakage (5,208 units across S1, M2, S3, S3T, X1 models).

Sidestand switch failures (NHTSA recall): 1995-1999 models were recalled for sidestand switch failures causing engine stalls (10,255 units across multiple Buell models).

Commonly replaced S2/S3 parts

  • Cam chain tensioner shoes
  • Rocker box gaskets
  • Half fairing and lower fairings (S3T)
  • Hard saddlebags and mounting hardware (S3T)
  • Brake pads and rotors
  • Exhaust system
  • Belt drive
  • Suspension components (WP or Showa depending on year)
  • Voltage regulator

Frequently asked questions

Q: Are S2 and S3 parts interchangeable

Some components cross over, particularly engine internals from the same era. However, the S3 received significant chassis improvements over the S2, including different suspension, brakes, and swingarm designs. The S2 uses the older Road Warrior-derived chassis while the S3 has a refined version. Bodywork between S2 and S3 is different. Within the S3 lineup, pre-1999 and 1999+ models differ in suspension brand, brake brand, and engine specification (carb vs. EFI).

Q: Will S3 Thunderbolt engine parts fit an M2 Cyclone or X1 Lightning

Yes, within the same era. A 1999+ S3 with Thunderstorm heads and EFI shares engine components directly with the 1999+ M2 Cyclone and X1 Lightning. Pre-1999 S3 engines with standard heads and carburetion share components with the pre-1999 S1 and M2.

Q: What makes the S3T different from the standard S3

The S3T adds lower fairing extensions for improved wind and rain protection to the rider's legs, taller handlebars for a more upright touring position, and hard saddlebags available in narrow or wide configurations. All mechanical components are identical between the S3 and S3T. The T-specific bodywork and accessories can be added to a standard S3 to effectively convert it.
