Used Super Tenere Parts

Used parts for the 2012-present Yamaha Super Tenere (XT1200Z/ES) are carried at Sun Coast Cycle Sports. The Super Tenere is Yamaha's large-displacement adventure tourer, using a 1199cc parallel-twin with a 270-degree crank, shaft drive, and a steel frame designed for serious long-distance travel on and off pavement. Available in standard (Z) and electronically suspended (ES/ZE) variants, the Super Tenere competes directly with the BMW R1200GS and other large adventure bikes. Our Florida technicians evaluate each Super Tenere donor, photograph parts under unique SKUs, and ship free across the continental U.S.

The Super Tenere's 1199cc parallel-twin is a unique engine not shared with any other Yamaha motorcycle. The 270-degree crankshaft firing order (similar to a 90-degree V-twin) provides strong, characterful torque delivery suited to adventure touring. The engine does NOT share parts with the CP2 (689cc MT-07 twin) or the CP3 (MT-09 triple) despite all being multi-cylinder Yamaha engines.

The Z and ZE/ES models share the same engine and most mechanical components. The ZE/ES adds electronically adjustable suspension (front and rear), heated grips, and on 2017+ models, LED cornering lights. Electronic suspension components are ZE/ES-specific.

The Super Tenere received incremental updates throughout its production: traction control refinement, updated LCD instrumentation, and improved suspension settings. Parts interchange well across model years within each variant (Z or ZE).

Common Super Tenere failure points and replacement parts

Shaft drive maintenance: The shaft final drive requires periodic oil changes. The Super Tenere's adventure use (loaded touring, off-road riding) stresses the shaft drive more than street-only use. Regular oil changes prevent premature bearing and gear wear.

ABS sensor contamination (off-road use): Off-road riding introduces dirt and water to the ABS wheel speed sensors, potentially triggering ABS faults. Sensor cleaning during routine service clears false fault codes.

Electronic suspension faults (ZE/ES): The electronically adjustable suspension can develop actuator or sensor faults. Dealer-level diagnostics are required to identify and repair electronic suspension issues.

Clutch judder: Some Super Tenere owners report clutch judder (vibration during clutch engagement), particularly on higher-mileage machines. Clutch plate replacement with the correct OEM specification resolves the issue.

Windscreen vibration: The manually adjustable windscreen can develop vibration or buzzing at certain heights and speeds. Aftermarket windscreens with better aerodynamic profiles and improved mounting hardware reduce vibration.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does the Super Tenere share its engine with any other Yamaha?

No. The 1199cc parallel-twin is unique to the Super Tenere. It does not share engine components with the MT-07 (689cc CP2 twin), MT-09 (847/890cc CP3 triple), FJR1300 (1298cc inline-four), or any other Yamaha model. Parts must be sourced from other Super Tenere donors or Yamaha dealer stock.

Q: What is the difference between the Z and ZE (ES) models?

The Z is the standard model. The ZE (or ES in some markets) adds electronically adjustable suspension (front and rear), heated grips, and on 2017+ models, LED cornering lights. Engine, frame, and most mechanical components are shared between Z and ZE. Electronic suspension components and wiring are ZE-specific.

Q: How does the Super Tenere compare to the BMW R1200GS?

Both are large-displacement adventure tourers with shaft drive. The Super Tenere uses a 1199cc parallel-twin in a steel frame; the R1200GS uses a 1170cc boxer twin in an aluminum frame with Telelever/Paralever suspension. No parts interchange between the two platforms. The Super Tenere is generally considered more reliable with fewer electronic complexity points, while the BMW offers more advanced suspension technology and a broader dealer network for adventure touring support.
