Used RMZ450 Parts

Sun Coast Cycle Sports carries inspected used OEM parts for the Suzuki RM-Z450, Suzuki's flagship motocross machine produced from 2005 through the present. The RM-Z450 is powered by a 449cc liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine and has won multiple AMA Supercross and Motocross championships. In 2006, the RM-Z450 became the first four-stroke to win an AMA Supercross title. Each RM-Z450 part we stock is sourced from donor machines, inspected for wear and damage, photographed, and shipped from our Florida parts facility.

RM-Z450 generation and parts compatibility

GenerationYearsEngineKey differences
Gen 12005-2006449cc liquid-cooled DOHC single, carbureted (Keihin FCR40)Original aluminum twin-spar frame. Kickstart only (2005). Electric start added 2006. Known connecting rod big-end bearing failures on 2006 models.
Gen 22007449cc liquid-cooled DOHC single, carburetedAll-new engine and frame design. Developed with Ricky Carmichael. Significant weight reduction.
Gen 32008-2017449cc liquid-cooled DOHC single, fuel-injected (2008+)Electronic fuel injection. First-gen traction management system (2008). Revised chassis rigidity (2013-2014). Showa SFF-Air fork (2013-2015). Same basic platform 2008-2017 with incremental updates.
Gen 42018-present449cc liquid-cooled DOHC single, fuel-injectedNew frame with rectangular main spars. Coil-spring Showa fork replaces SFF-Air. Third-gen traction management. Showa BFRC rear shock.

The RM-Z450 received substantial redesigns in 2007, 2008, and 2018, making those the primary compatibility break points. Within the 2008-2017 range, the chassis remained fundamentally the same with incremental stiffness and suspension changes. Wheels and hubs are generally interchangeable from 2005 forward. Forks and triple clamps changed at several points: 2005-2006, 2007, 2008-2012, 2013-2017 (SFF-Air fork, with a steering stem change around 2013), and 2018+. Bodywork/plastics fit within generation windows but do not cross between them.

Common RM-Z450 failure points and replacement parts

Connecting rod big-end bearing failure (2005-2006): The early RM-Z450, particularly the 2006 model, had a documented issue with the big-end rod bearing failing prematurely. When the bearing disintegrates, fragments circulate through the engine and typically require a full rebuild. This was addressed in the 2007 redesign.

Fork seal leaks (all years): As a motocross bike subjected to extreme suspension loads, fork seal replacement is a frequent maintenance item. The 2013-2015 SFF-Air fork design was particularly criticized by riders for being difficult to maintain and set up correctly.

Clutch wear (all years): Aggressive riding and racing put heavy demands on the RM-Z450's clutch. Plates and springs wear quickly under race conditions. This is a routine maintenance item rather than a defect.

Plastic and subframe cracking (all years): Crashes and hard landings can crack the plastics, subframe, and occasionally the main frame on any motocross bike. Subframe and frame inspection after any significant crash is critical.

Commonly replaced RM-Z450 parts

  • Pistons, rings, and cylinder (top-end rebuild kits)
  • Clutch plates, springs, and basket
  • Fork seals and suspension valving components
  • Plastics and graphics kits
  • Brake rotors and pads
  • Chain, sprockets, and chain guide
  • Radiators and hoses
  • Subframe and frame components

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will 2008-2012 RM-Z450 parts fit a 2013-2017 model?

The 2008-2017 RM-Z450 shares the same basic chassis platform, so many components interchange. However, the 2013+ models received a stiffer frame, the Showa SFF-Air fork (with a potentially different steering stem), and updated electronics. Wheels, brakes, and many engine internals are compatible across this range, but forks, triple clamps, and some electrical components may not directly swap without modification.

Q: Are RM-Z450 and RM-Z250 parts interchangeable?

Very few parts interchange between the RM-Z450 and RM-Z250. They use completely different engines, frames, and suspension components. Some controls, levers, and small hardware items may cross over, but no major assemblies are shared.
