Sun Coast Cycle Sports carries inspected used parts for the 2015-2019 Yamaha YZF-R1, the MotoGP-derived generation that breached 200 hp and introduced a full suite of electronic rider aids derived directly from Yamaha's M1 factory racer. Featuring a lighter crossplane-crank engine, a magnesium-intensive chassis, and a comprehensive electronics package (lean-angle-sensitive traction control, slide control, launch control, quickshifter, and IMU-based ABS), the 2015+ R1 represents the pinnacle of Yamaha supersport development. The R1M variant adds Ohlins semi-active electronic suspension and carbon fiber bodywork. Our Odessa, Florida technicians strip each 15-19 R1 donor, photograph every component under a unique SKU, and list it with free shipping throughout the lower 48.
15-19 YZF-R1 generation and parts compatibility
| Model | Years | Engine | Power | Key Features |
| YZF-R1 | 2015-2019 | 998cc inline-4, crossplane crank, DOHC, 4-valve, FI | 200 hp (crank) | IMU; lean-angle TC; launch control; quickshifter; TFT dash; magnesium chassis |
| YZF-R1M | 2015-2019 | 998cc inline-4, crossplane crank | 200 hp | Ohlins electronic suspension; carbon fiber bodywork; GPS data logger; limited production |
The 2015+ R1 uses a lighter, more powerful version of the crossplane-crank inline-four that does NOT share engine internals with the 2009-2014 crossplane R1. The bore and stroke were revised, and the engine was extensively lightened. ECU, throttle bodies, and the entire electronics architecture are also new.
The R1 and R1M share the same engine and most mechanical components. The R1M adds Ohlins electronic semi-active suspension (front and rear), carbon fiber bodywork panels, a GPS data logging system, and a special color scheme. R1M-specific components (Ohlins electronic suspension, carbon bodywork) command premium prices. Standard R1 suspension and bodywork can be installed on an R1M frame (and vice versa) for cost reduction or customization.
The 2015-2019 R1 received incremental updates: 2016 brought a 60th anniversary edition, 2017 added a TFT dashboard option, and 2018-2019 received minor refinements. Parts interchange freely across 2015-2019 within the standard R1 and within the R1M. The R1 was discontinued for street use in many markets after 2024 due to emissions regulations.
Common 15-19 YZF-R1 failure points and replacement parts
Quickshifter calibration: The standard quickshifter can produce harsh shifts at low RPM or during cold operation. The system works best in the mid-to-upper RPM range during spirited riding. Some owners recalibrate the shift sensor sensitivity for improved low-RPM behavior.
IMU and electronics faults: The six-axis IMU and comprehensive electronics suite can develop sensor faults that trigger warning lights and reduce the electronics to basic function. IMU recalibration or sensor replacement resolves most faults. The electronics are complex but generally reliable.
Stator (improved but not eliminated): The 2015+ R1 improved stator reliability over the 2009-2014, but charging system failures still occur. Regular monitoring of charging voltage catches developing issues before complete failure.
Ohlins electronic suspension (R1M): The semi-active suspension system can develop actuator or sensor faults. Ohlins service is specialized and more expensive than conventional suspension service. The electronic suspension provides extraordinary performance when functioning properly.
Carbon fiber bodywork damage (R1M): The R1M's carbon fiber panels are expensive to replace and cannot be repaired as easily as conventional ABS plastic fairings. Track day incidents with carbon bodywork are costly.
Commonly replaced 15-19 R1 parts
- Fairing panels (crash damage, very expensive R1M carbon)
- Stator
- Quickshifter sensor
- IMU and sensors
- Chain and sprocket set
- Fork seals and suspension service
- Brake pads and rotors
- Exhaust system (aftermarket popular)
- Windscreen
Frequently asked questions
Q: Are R1 and R1M parts interchangeable?
Engine, frame, brakes, wheels, chain drive, and most electrical components are shared. The R1M adds Ohlins electronic suspension (front and rear) and carbon fiber bodywork, which are R1M-specific. Standard R1 suspension and plastic bodywork can be installed on an R1M, and vice versa, though the electronic suspension requires the R1M-specific ECU calibration to function.
Q: Will 2009-2014 crossplane R1 parts fit my 2015-2019?
No. Despite both using crossplane crankshafts, the 2015+ engine is a complete redesign with different bore, stroke, internals, and electronics. The chassis, frame, and bodywork are also entirely new. No meaningful parts interchange between the 2009-2014 and 2015-2019 R1 generations.
Q: Is the R1 being discontinued?
Yamaha announced in 2024 that the YZF-R1 would no longer be sold as a street bike in many markets due to increasingly strict emissions regulations. The R1 may continue as a track-only or race-homologation model. Yamaha's rumored YZF-R9 (based on the CP3 triple) may fill the supersport role in the street lineup. Existing R1 models continue to be fully supported for parts and service.
