Used R1200R Parts

Inspected used parts for the 2006-2018 BMW R1200R naked roadster are stocked at Sun Coast Cycle Sports. The R1200R strips away the GS's adventure gear and the RT's touring fairing to deliver the boxer-twin experience in a straightforward naked bike package with upright ergonomics, minimal bodywork, and accessible maintenance. Spanning all three boxer engine generations (Hexhead, Camhead, Wethead), the R offers the same fundamental engine as its siblings in a lighter, simpler chassis. Our Florida technicians evaluate each R1200R donor, photograph parts under unique SKUs, and ship free across the continental U.S.

R1200R generation and parts compatibility

GenerationYearsEnginePowerKey Features
Hexhead2006-20091170cc air/oil-cooled boxer, SOHC109 hpNaked roadster; Telelever/Paralever; optional ABS
Camhead2010-20141170cc air/oil-cooled boxer, DOHC110 hpDOHC engine update; same chassis as Hexhead R
Wethead2015-20181170cc liquid-cooled boxer, DOHC125 hpComplete redesign; liquid cooling, ride modes, TFT dash option

The R1200R shares engine internals with all R1200 models of the same generation. The R's lighter weight and simpler configuration make it particularly straightforward to service. The Camhead R1200R engine is the same unit used in the BMW R nineT (2014+), making R nineT donors a useful parts source for Camhead R1200R engine components.

The 2015 Wethead R1200R was a complete redesign with a new frame, bodywork, and electronics. No chassis or body parts from the 2006-2014 R fit the 2015-2018 model. Within the Hexhead/Camhead era, the chassis remained largely unchanged, so body panels and many chassis components interchange across 2006-2014.

Common R1200R failure points and replacement parts

Final drive and driveshaft: Same shaft-drive final drive vulnerability as all R1200 models. Regular oil changes and spline lubrication are essential.

Alternator belt: Belt-driven alternator requires periodic inspection and replacement. The R's lower electrical load compared to the RT means less stress on the charging system, but belt failure still leaves the bike without charging.

Valve adjustment (Camhead): The Camhead's shim-and-bucket system is more labor-intensive than the Hexhead's screw adjusters. Budget for longer service times on 2010-2014 models.

Throttle body synchronization: Both cylinders must be balanced for smooth operation. Out-of-sync throttle bodies cause rough idle and hesitation.

Hall effect sensor failure (ignition): The Hall effect sensors in the ignition system can fail, causing misfires or no-start conditions. This is more common on higher-mileage Hexhead models. Symptoms include intermittent misfiring on one cylinder, rough running that worsens with heat, or complete failure to start. Testing the sensor output with a multimeter identifies the failed unit.

Clutch throw-out bearing wear: The dry clutch on R1200 boxers uses a throw-out bearing that can develop noise and play at higher mileage, producing a grinding or squealing sound when the clutch lever is pulled. Bearing replacement is labor-intensive as it requires removing the gearbox, but is a well-documented procedure in the BMW community.

Commonly replaced R1200R parts

  • Final drive unit and bearings
  • Alternator belt
  • Valve adjustment shims (Camhead/Wethead)
  • Hall effect sensors (ignition)
  • Telelever fork bushings and seals
  • Clutch assembly and throw-out bearing
  • Exhaust system
  • Seat (frequently upgraded for comfort)
  • Brake pads and rotors

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does the R1200R share parts with the R nineT?

The BMW R nineT (2014+) uses the Camhead engine, the same engine found in the 2010-2014 R1200R. Engine internals interchange between the two. The R nineT uses a different frame, bodywork, and rear suspension (conventional shocks vs Paralever), so chassis parts do not cross over. The R nineT is one of the best donor sources for Camhead engine parts due to its continued production.

Q: Will R1200GS or RT engine parts fit my R1200R?

Yes, within the same generation. All R1200 models (GS, RT, R, RS, ST, S) within the same engine generation (Hexhead, Camhead, or Wethead) share identical engine internals. The GS and RT are higher-volume models and are the most readily available donor sources for R1200R engine parts.

Q: Are 2006-2014 and 2015-2018 R1200R parts interchangeable?

No, for chassis and body components. The 2015 redesign introduced a new frame, bodywork, and electronics. Engine internals from the Camhead (2010-2014) do not fit the Wethead (2015-2018) either. The Hexhead and Camhead R1200R (2006-2014) share a common chassis, so body panels and many chassis parts interchange across that era.
