Used Vintage CX Parts

This page covers Honda's CX and GL series liquid-cooled V-twin motorcycles from the late 1970s and 1980s: the CX500 (1978-1982), CX650 (1983), GL500 Silver Wing (1981-1982), and GL650 Silver Wing (1983). These 80-degree pushrod V-twins with shaft drive were Honda's first liquid-cooled street bikes and have become extremely popular platforms for cafe racer and custom builds. The CX500 Turbo (1982) was the world's first turbocharged production motorcycle. Parts from CX/GL donors at Sun Coast Cycle Sports are individually inspected at our Florida facility.

CX/GL platform overview and parts compatibility

The CX500 and GL500 Silver Wing share the same 497cc V-twin engine but use different frames, bodywork, and riding positions. The CX500 is a standard/sport bike; the GL500 is a touring-oriented machine with fairing and saddlebags. Engine internals interchange between CX500 and GL500 within the same production years. The CX650 and GL650 are displacement-increased versions (673cc) introduced for 1983 only. The CX650/GL650 engine shares its architecture with the CX500/GL500 but uses different bore dimensions, and many internal components do not directly cross between 500cc and 650cc versions despite external similarities.

The CX500 Turbo (1982) is a unique variant with Honda's first fuel injection system, a turbocharger, intercooler, and dedicated wiring. Turbo-specific components (turbo assembly, wastegate, fuel injection, ECU, intercooler) are exclusive to the Turbo model and extremely scarce. The base engine shares its V-twin architecture with the standard CX500 but has lower compression internals and different head castings. Non-turbo-specific engine parts may cross, but verify before ordering.

None of the CX/GL models share parts with any other Honda motorcycle family. The pushrod V-twin with shaft drive is unique to this platform.

Common CX/GL failure points and replacement parts

Stator failure: The CX500/CX650 stator is the most commonly failed component on these bikes. The original stator windings degrade with age and heat, causing charging failure. This is a universal issue across all CX/GL models regardless of mileage. Aftermarket replacement stators are available and are considered a standard restoration item.

Regulator/rectifier failure: Related to the stator issue, the original rectifiers fail from thermal cycling over decades. Combined with a failed stator, the result is a dead battery and no-start condition. Upgrade to a modern combined MOSFET unit when replacing either component.

Camshaft and rocker arm wear: The pushrod V-twin uses rocker arms and cam followers that can wear unevenly over high mileage, particularly if oil changes were neglected. Inspect the cam lobes and rocker surfaces on any used engine. Replacement camshafts are scarce and used units with good surfaces are valuable.

Final drive seal leaks: The shaft drive's final drive housing seals harden and leak with age. Oil seepage from the rear drive is nearly universal on CX/GL models that haven't had the seals replaced. The repair requires removing the rear wheel and final drive assembly but is straightforward.

Fuel system deterioration: Rubber fuel lines, petcock diaphragms, and carburetor internals degrade over 40+ years. Any CX/GL being returned to service after storage will need a complete fuel system refresh.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Do CX500 and GL500 Silver Wing engine parts interchange

Yes, the CX500 and GL500 share the same 497cc V-twin engine. Internal components (pistons, valves, crankshaft, transmission) interchange. The two models differ in frame, bodywork, and riding position. External engine covers may have minor differences due to frame clearance but the core engine is the same.

Q: Do CX500 and CX650 parts cross

Some external components and chassis parts may cross, but the engines are different displacements (497cc vs 673cc). Internal engine components (pistons, cylinders, heads) generally do not interchange between the 500 and 650. Verify the specific part before assuming compatibility.

Q: Why are CX500 parts in such high demand

The CX500 has become one of the most popular platforms for cafe racer and custom motorcycle builds. The V-twin with shaft drive provides a clean, chain-free aesthetic that custom builders favor. This demand has driven up prices for clean OEM components, particularly tanks, gauges, and engine covers.
