Sun Coast Cycle Sports offers inspected used parts for the 1999-2006 Harley-Davidson FXST and FXSTI Softail Standard powered by the Twin Cam 88B engine (1450cc). This entry-level Softail served as the foundation for countless custom builds with its clean, minimalist styling and solid-mount chassis. Every part from our Florida facility undergoes individual inspection, photography, and SKU assignment before listing with complimentary shipping across the continental U.S.
FXSTI Standard 88ci generation and parts compatibility
The Twin Cam-powered Softail Standard was produced from 1999 through 2006. Model designations indicate the fuel delivery system: FXST for carbureted versions and FXSTI for fuel-injected models, which became available in 2001 and standard by 2005.
| Years | Model Code | Engine | Fuel System |
| 1999-2004 | FXST | Twin Cam 88B (1450cc) | Carburetor |
| 2001-2006 | FXSTI | Twin Cam 88B (1450cc) | Fuel injection |
Note: This page covers the Twin Cam 88B era (1999-2006). Earlier Softail Standards from 1984-1999 used the 80ci Evolution engine on a different chassis and are not covered here. The Evolution and Twin Cam Softail frames are not interchangeable.
The FXST/FXSTI shares its complete drivetrain with all 2000-2006 Twin Cam 88B Softails. Engine, transmission, primary drive, and most frame components interchange with the FLSTF Fat Boy, FLSTC Heritage Classic, FXSTD Deuce, FXSTB Night Train, FXSTS Springer Softail, and FLSTN Softail Deluxe of the same era. The Standard's minimalist approach means most of its bodywork and accessories are shared with or interchangeable from other Softail models, making parts sourcing relatively straightforward compared to more specialized variants.
The Twin Cam 88B is the counterbalanced version designed for solid-mount Softail frames. While top-end components share specifications with the rubber-mounted TC88 in Dyna and Touring models, the crankcases, crankshaft, and balancer system are specific to the B-series and do not interchange.
Common FXSTI Standard 88ci failure points and replacement parts
Cam chain tensioner wear (1999-2006): All Twin Cam 88 engines from this era use spring-loaded plastic tensioner shoes that wear over time. Plastic debris contaminates the oil system and can damage internal components. The characteristic symptom is a whining or scraping noise from the cam chest on startup. Harley redesigned this system for 2007 with hydraulic tensioners. Aftermarket gear-drive cam systems are a popular permanent solution during rebuilds.
Inner cam bearing issues: The pressed-fit INA inner cam bearing on 1999-2006 Twin Cams is a known weak point, particularly when tensioner debris accelerates wear. Symptoms include noise from the cam chest and metal particles in the oil filter. Upgraded bearing kits are available.
Compensator clunk: The primary compensator absorbs drivetrain shock but can develop a pronounced clunk on deceleration when worn. Aftermarket hydraulic compensators reduce this noise and smooth power delivery.
Stator and charging system: The stator can fail due to heat, presenting as charging problems or dead batteries. Common on bikes with added electrical accessories that increase system demand.
Intake manifold leaks (carbureted FXST): The rubber intake seals on carbureted models harden and crack with age, causing vacuum leaks. Symptoms include rough idle, backfiring, and poor throttle response.

Frequently asked questions
Q: What is the difference between FXST and FXSTI?
The I suffix indicates fuel injection. FXST models use a carburetor for fuel delivery, while FXSTI models use electronic fuel injection (EFI). The engines are mechanically identical internally. The differences are in the fuel delivery components: carburetor, intake manifold, and enrichener circuit on FXST versus throttle body, fuel pump, injectors, and ECM on FXSTI. Fuel injection became available as an option in 2001 and was standard by 2005.
Q: Will 1984-1999 Evolution Softail Standard parts fit my Twin Cam FXST?
Very limited interchange. The 1999 model year marked a complete platform change from Evolution to Twin Cam. Frames, engines, transmissions, and primary drives are not interchangeable between Evo and TC Softails. Some accessories, seats, and smaller trim pieces may physically fit but model-specific components do not cross over. Always verify compatibility by year when sourcing parts.
Q: Can I use parts from a Dyna or Touring Twin Cam on my Softail Standard?
Top-end engine components including cylinders, heads, pistons, cams, and rocker boxes share specifications between TC88 and TC88B. Lower engine components including crankcases and crankshaft assemblies are NOT interchangeable due to the counterbalancer system unique to the Softail's B-series engines. Transmission, primary, and chassis components are also different between Softail, Dyna, and Touring platforms.
