Used Rebel CMX 500 Parts

This page covers used Honda Rebel 500 (CMX500) parts available at Sun Coast Cycle Sports. The Rebel 500 launched in 2017 as a modern bobber-style cruiser built around the 471cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine from Honda's CB500 family. It quickly became one of the best-selling cruisers in the US market. The CMX500 shares its chassis with the Rebel 300 and its engine architecture with the CB500F, CBR500R, and CB500X. All parts from these donors at our facility in Odessa, Florida are inspected by powersports technicians, photographed individually, and assigned unique SKUs.

Rebel CMX 500 generation and parts compatibility

GenerationYearsEngineKey details
Launch2017-2019471cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, DOHCNew platform. 41mm conventional forks, single front disc (296mm), ABS optional. Halogen lighting.
Update2020+471cc liquid-cooled parallel twin, DOHCLED headlight and taillight, new instrument cluster, slipper-assist clutch. ABS standard from 2020. SE trim added 2021.

The Rebel 500 has been on the same platform since 2017. The 2020 model year brought LED lighting, a slipper-assist clutch, and a revised instrument display, but the frame, engine, swingarm, and suspension geometry are unchanged. Most components interchange across all model years. The 2020+ LED headlight does not fit 2017-2019 models (and vice versa), and the slipper-assist clutch from 2020+ uses different clutch components than 2017-2019. Everything else crosses freely.

Rebel 500 / Rebel 300 interchange: The CMX500 and CMX300 share the same frame, swingarm, suspension, wheels, brakes, handlebars, foot controls, body panels, seat, and fenders. If a part is chassis-mounted (not engine-related), it will fit both bikes. No engine parts cross between the two because the 300 uses a 286cc single and the 500 uses a 471cc twin.

CB500 family engine interchange: The Rebel 500's 471cc engine is the same basic unit found in the CB500F, CBR500R, and CB500X (2013+). Internal engine components (pistons, valves, crankshaft, transmission gears) interchange across all models in the CB500 family. However, the Rebel has different exhaust routing, airbox design, ECU mapping (tuned for more low-end torque), and engine mounting points. External engine accessories, intake, and exhaust components are generally not cross-compatible with the CB500 sport/adventure models.

The Rebel 500 also shares some frame components with the newer Honda CL500 (2023+) scrambler, though the extent of chassis interchange between the two is still being documented by the community.

Common Rebel CMX 500 failure points and replacement parts

Exhaust pipe discoloration/corrosion (all years): The blacked-out exhaust pipes on the Rebel 500 are prone to heat discoloration, turning from black to brown or blue. On 2017-2019 models in particular, surface rust can develop where the coating breaks down. This is primarily cosmetic but is one of the most frequently discussed issues on Rebel forums.

Coolant system access difficulty (all years): The coolant reserve tank is located in a cramped space beneath the battery carrier, making routine coolant flushing more difficult than it should be. The siphon hose clamp is notoriously hard to reach, leading some owners to defer this maintenance.

Rear brake softness (2017-2021 ABS models): Some ABS-equipped Rebel 500 owners report a spongy or soft rear brake pedal that requires excessive force or pumping. This is typically caused by air in the brake lines and is resolved by proper bleeding, but the issue recurs frequently enough to be a common forum topic.

Kill switch contact issues (2017-2019): Intermittent no-start conditions traced to poor electrical contact in the handlebar kill switch. Cleaning contacts with electrical contact cleaner resolves the problem in most cases.

NHTSA Campaign 21V-382 (2020-2021 models): Dim rear reflector that may not meet federal brightness standards. Honda replaced affected reflectors at no charge. This affected multiple Honda models from the same Thai production facility.

Commonly replaced Rebel CMX 500 parts

  • Exhaust system and heat shields
  • Body panels and fenders (crash and cosmetic damage)
  • Levers, mirrors, and bar ends
  • Headlight assembly (halogen or LED by year)
  • Brake pads and brake lines
  • Chain and sprockets
  • Seat (single and passenger kit)
  • Foot pegs and forward controls
  • Coolant hoses and radiator components

Frequently asked questions

Q: Do Rebel 300 body panels and chassis parts fit the Rebel 500?

Yes. The Rebel 300 and Rebel 500 share the same frame, so body panels, fenders, seat, handlebars, mirrors, foot pegs, brake components, wheels, and suspension parts interchange directly. Only the engine and engine-related components (intake, exhaust, ECU) differ between the two models.

Q: Can I use CB500F or CBR500R engine parts in a Rebel 500?

Internal engine components (pistons, valves, crankshaft, connecting rods, transmission gears) are shared across the entire CB500/CBR500R/CB500X/CMX500 family. The engines use the same 471cc parallel-twin architecture. However, the Rebel's exhaust routing, intake system, ECU calibration, and engine mounting points are unique, so external engine accessories do not cross directly.

Q: Is the Rebel 500 related to the old Rebel 250 or Rebel 450?

No. The 2017+ Rebel 300/500 platform is an entirely new design with no connection to the CMX250C (1985-2016) or CMX450C (1986-1987). Nothing interchanges between the classic Rebel models and the modern 300/500 platform.
