The Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 (RA1250) is an adventure-touring motorcycle produced from 2021 onward, powered by the 1,252cc Revolution Max 1250 DOHC V-twin. It was Harley-Davidson's first entry into the ADV segment, available in standard RA1250 and RA1250S (Special) variants with Adaptive Ride Height. The Pan America shares its engine platform with the Sportster S (RH1250S) but uses a completely different frame, subframe, bodywork, and suspension. Sun Coast carries Pan America parts sourced from donor units at our Florida shop, with every component inspected and cataloged individually.
Pan America generation and parts compatibility
| Variant | Years | Engine | Key differences |
| RA1250 (Standard) | 2021+ | 1,252cc Revolution Max V-twin, 150hp | Semi-active Showa suspension, standard ride height, wire-spoke or cast wheels depending on year. |
| RA1250S (Special) | 2021+ | 1,252cc Revolution Max V-twin, 150hp | Adaptive Ride Height (ARH), semi-active electronically adjusted Showa suspension, additional electronic rider aids. |
The RA1250 and RA1250S share the same engine, frame, and most structural components. The primary differences are the electronically adjustable suspension and Adaptive Ride Height system on the S model, along with some additional electronic features. Bodywork panels are interchangeable between the standard and Special for same-year models. The Revolution Max 1250 V-twin is shared with the Sportster S (RH1250S), but the intake system, exhaust routing, engine mounts, wiring harness, and ECU mapping are all different between the Pan America and Sportster S applications. A direct engine swap between the two is not straightforward. The Pan America shares no frame, bodywork, suspension, or chassis components with any other Harley-Davidson model. It is a standalone adventure platform.
Common Pan America failure points and replacement parts
Seat base fastener retention (2021 models): NHTSA Campaign 21V924000 (Harley recall 0178), 2,689 units. The seat base on 2021 Pan America models built between March and October 2021 could lose threaded insert retention at fastening locations, potentially causing the passenger hand-hold to fracture under load. The condition was most likely triggered by upward force applied while deploying the center stand. Harley-Davidson replaced affected seat bases.
Instrument cluster software (2021 models): NHTSA Campaign 22V030000 (Harley recall 0631), 3,917 units (shared recall with 2021 Sportster S). The instrument cluster module could fail to display the speedometer and neutral indicator when the module temperature was below freezing at cold startup. A dealer software update corrected the issue.
Adaptive Ride Height system (RA1250S): The electronically controlled Adaptive Ride Height system on the Special model is a complex electromechanical system. Owners have reported occasional sensor faults and system error codes, particularly in cold weather or after extended storage. The ARH actuator and associated sensors are RA1250S-specific and not shared with the standard model.
Accessory mounting and heat management: The Revolution Max engine produces significant heat, and riders have reported heat-related issues with certain aftermarket accessories and luggage mounted close to the exhaust. The stock exhaust routing runs close to the right pannier mounting area, which can affect luggage and accessory compatibility.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Are Pan America and Sportster S engines interchangeable?
Both use the Revolution Max 1250 V-twin, but the engine is tuned differently in each application, and the mounting points, intake routing, exhaust system, wiring harness, and ECU are all model-specific. Internal engine components like pistons, crankshaft, and cylinder heads are shared at the hardware level, but complete engine swaps require significant adaptation.
Q: Do RA1250 and RA1250S body panels interchange?
Yes. The bodywork is the same between the standard and Special for same-year models. The main differences between the two variants are the electronically adjustable suspension, Adaptive Ride Height system, and some electronic features. Panels, fenders, tank covers, and beak are shared.
