Used GEM Electric Parts

The Polaris GEM (Global Electric Motorcars) is a line of street-legal low-speed electric vehicles (LSVs) that Polaris acquired in 2011. GEM vehicles are neighborhood electric vehicles designed for campus, resort, municipal, and local-street use at speeds up to 25 mph, and are federally classified as LSVs rather than traditional powersports vehicles. The lineup includes passenger models (e2 for 2 passengers, e4 for 4, e6 for 6) and utility models (eL XD flatbed, eM1400 heavy-duty). All are battery-electric with no internal combustion engine. Sun Coast occasionally receives GEM donor vehicles and lists salvage parts as they become available, each piece inspected at our Florida facility, photographed, and cataloged under its own SKU. Note that GEM was sold to Waev Inc. in January 2022 and is no longer a Polaris brand, though Polaris-era GEM vehicles remain in wide use.

GEM generation and parts compatibility

EraYearsBatteryKey notes
Pre-Polaris (Chrysler/DaimlerChrysler era)1998-201048V lead-acid (6x 8V batteries)Original GEM design. Lower motor output (3.5-5 kW). Basic instrumentation.
Polaris era2011-202148V lead-acid or optional lithium-ion (from ~2017)Upgraded motors (5-7 kW), improved suspension, Polaris branding. 7 hp motor standard from 2014.
Redesigned (late Polaris/Waev era)2022-presentLithium-ion standard on most modelsFull redesign with automotive-like features, new chassis, optional power steering. Now under Waev Inc.

GEM vehicles within the same model designation (e2, e4, e6, eL XD) share many components within their production era, but the three eras listed above represent distinct designs with limited cross-compatibility. The pre-Polaris and Polaris-era GEMs share some frame and suspension DNA, but the 2022+ redesign is a clean-sheet platform. Within the Polaris era, the e2, e4, and e6 share the same basic drivetrain (motor, controller, charger) but differ in frame length, body panels, and seating configuration. The eL XD and eM1400 are utility-specific variants with their own bed and frame components. GEM vehicles share no components with any Polaris ATV, UTV, or motorcycle platform. They are a completely separate vehicle class with a separate parts ecosystem.

Common GEM failure points and replacement parts

Battery pack degradation (lead-acid models): The most common and expensive maintenance item on older GEM vehicles is the lead-acid battery pack. The standard 48V system uses six 8-volt deep-cycle batteries that degrade with age, charge cycles, and improper maintenance. Range loss is progressive. Battery replacement is a routine ownership cost on any GEM more than 3-4 years old. Lithium-ion packs on newer models have significantly longer life but are more expensive to replace.

Motor controller failures: The electronic motor controller on older GEM models can fail, typically presenting as loss of power, speed fluctuations, or complete no-drive conditions. Controller replacement is a specialized repair.

Charger malfunctions: The onboard charger is critical for daily operation. Charger failures can present as slow charging, failure to complete a charge cycle, or complete failure to charge. On older GEMs, the charger is a commonly replaced component.

Suspension and steering wear: GEM vehicles are often used in campus, resort, and municipal fleets where they accumulate significant hours at low speeds over rough surfaces (parking lots, cobblestone, gravel paths). Ball joints, tie rod ends, and bushing wear are common on high-hour examples.

Body panel and windshield damage: Fleet-operated GEMs suffer cosmetic damage from tight-quarters operation. Body panels, windshields, and bumper components are frequently replaced items.

Commonly replaced GEM parts

  • Battery pack (lead-acid or lithium-ion)
  • Onboard charger
  • Motor controller
  • Drive motor
  • Body panels and bumpers
  • Windshield (automotive glass on newer models)
  • Suspension components (ball joints, tie rod ends, bushings)
  • Brake shoes and drums (or disc brake pads on newer models)
  • Seat upholstery (Kevlar-backed vinyl on commercial models)

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does the GEM share any parts with Polaris ATVs or UTVs

No. GEM vehicles are a completely separate product line from Polaris' powersports vehicles. They are battery-electric low-speed vehicles with no internal combustion engine and no mechanical relationship to any Polaris ATV, UTV, motorcycle, or snowmobile. Parts sourcing for GEM vehicles is within the GEM ecosystem only.

Q: Are pre-Polaris and Polaris-era GEM parts interchangeable

Some components cross between the pre-Polaris (Chrysler/DaimlerChrysler era, 1998-2010) and Polaris-era (2011-2021) GEMs within the same model designation, as the platform evolved incrementally rather than being fully redesigned. Battery packs, motors, and some suspension parts may be compatible, but body panels and electronics changed over time. The 2022+ redesigned GEMs are a new platform with much more limited backward compatibility. Always verify the specific model year and component before purchasing.
