Sun Coast Cycle Sports stocks inspected used parts for the 2018-present BMW F850GS and F750GS, the third generation of BMW's middleweight adventure platform. The F850GS replaced the F800GS with a new 853cc parallel-twin engine (manufactured by Loncin in China), a new bridge-style steel frame replacing the tubular space frame, and the fuel tank relocated from under the seat to the traditional position above the engine. Despite the displacement similarity, the F850/F750 engine shares NO parts with the F800 Rotax engine. Our Odessa, Florida technicians evaluate each F850 donor, photograph parts under unique SKUs, and ship free throughout the lower 48.
F850GS / F750GS generation and parts compatibility
| Model | Years | Engine | Power | Key Features |
| F750GS | 2018+ | 853cc parallel-twin, DOHC, 4-valve (Loncin) | 77 hp | Lower seat; 19" front; detuned; bridge frame; chain drive |
| F850GS / Adventure | 2018+ | 853cc parallel-twin, DOHC, 4-valve (Loncin) | 90 hp | Full-power; 21" front; long-travel; optional ESA; TFT dash |
The F850GS and F750GS share the same 853cc parallel-twin engine with a 270-degree firing interval (different from the F800's 360-degree firing order), giving a more characterful exhaust note. The F750GS is detuned to 77 hp through ECU calibration, while the F850GS produces 90 hp. Engine internals interchange between the F750GS and F850GS.
The F850 engine is also the basis for the F900R and F900XR (2020+), which are bored out to 895cc. Some lower-end engine components (crankshaft, connecting rods) may cross over between the 853cc F850 and 895cc F900, but cylinders, pistons, and heads are displacement-specific. Verify by part number before assuming cross-compatibility.
The F850GS/F750GS does NOT share engine parts with the F800GS/F700GS. The Rotax 798cc (F800/F700) and Loncin 853cc (F850/F750) are completely different engines from different manufacturers. Chassis, bodywork, and electronics are also different between the two generations.
Common F850GS failure points and replacement parts
Limited long-term data (newer platform): The F850GS launched in 2018 and has not yet accumulated the service history of the F800 platform. Early ownership reports are generally positive, though some issues have emerged.
Chain and sprocket wear: All F850/F750 models use chain drive. Chain maintenance is the primary drivetrain consumable. The F850's higher output (vs F800) may accelerate chain wear during aggressive riding.
TFT display faults: Some early F850GS models reported TFT instrument cluster glitches, including screen blanking or connectivity issues. Software updates from BMW address most TFT-related faults.
Fuel pump (early reports): Some F850GS owners report fuel pump noise or failure. The fuel tank relocation (from under-seat to above-engine) changed the fuel delivery system architecture from the F800.
Sprag clutch noise: Some F850 engines develop a rattling noise from the starter sprag clutch area, particularly during cold starts. This is being monitored by the community as the fleet accumulates mileage.
Commonly replaced F850GS parts
- Chain and sprocket set
- Brake pads and rotors
- Air filter
- Fork seals and suspension service
- Crash bars and skid plate (adventure use)
- Windscreen (various heights)
- Hand guards
- Fuel pump (if failing)
- LED auxiliary lighting
Frequently asked questions
Q: Does the F850GS share parts with the F800GS?
No, for engine and most chassis components. The F850GS (853cc Loncin engine, bridge frame) and F800GS (798cc Rotax engine, tubular frame) are different platforms. No engine parts interchange. Some universal accessories (hand guards, GPS mounts, crash bar brands) may physically fit both, but model-specific parts are generation-specific.
Q: Are F850GS and F750GS parts interchangeable?
Engine internals interchange (same 853cc engine at different tunes). Many chassis components are shared. The F850GS has longer-travel suspension, a 21-inch front wheel, and taller bodywork; the F750GS has a lower seat, 19-inch front, and shorter suspension. Suspension components and some bodywork are model-specific.
Q: Does the F850GS share its engine with the F900?
The F900R and F900XR use an enlarged 895cc version of the same engine architecture. Some bottom-end components may cross over, but the bore increase makes cylinders, pistons, and heads displacement-specific. The two engines share the same manufacturing origin (Loncin) and design philosophy but are different displacements.
