Used Spyder GS 990 Parts

This page covers used OEM parts for the Can-Am Spyder GS 990, the original first-generation Can-Am Spyder produced from 2008 through 2012. The GS 990 introduced the three-wheeled roadster concept to the mainstream market, featuring a 998cc Rotax V-twin engine (the same BRP-Rotax SE5 unit used in some Aprilia and BMW applications), a five-speed semi-automatic or manual transmission, and a Y-frame chassis with two front wheels providing car-like stability. Sun Coast Cycle Sports carries inspected Spyder GS 990 components, each individually cataloged and shipped from Florida.

Spyder GS 990 generation and parts compatibility

The Spyder GS 990 was the first Can-Am Spyder, produced from 2008 through 2012 in GS (base), RS (sport), and RS-S (sport with semi-automatic) variants. All first-generation Spyder models share the same 998cc Rotax V-twin engine, frame, and most mechanical components. The RS and RS-S variants have sportier suspension tuning, different bodywork trim, and (on RS-S) a semi-automatic SE5 transmission instead of the manual SM5.

The Spyder GS 990 does not share its 998cc V-twin engine with any later Spyder model. The Spyder RT (2010+) initially used the same engine family but transitioned to different powertrains. The Spyder F3 (2015+) uses a 1330cc Rotax triple-cylinder that shares nothing with the GS 990's V-twin. The Spyder ST (2013-2016) used the same 998cc engine as the GS, so engine internals may cross over between the GS and ST within the V-twin generation.

The Ryker does not share chassis or engine components with the Spyder GS 990. These are fundamentally different platforms.

Common Spyder GS 990 failure points and replacement parts

Transmission issues (SE5 semi-automatic): The SE5 semi-automatic transmission uses an electro-hydraulic shifting system that can develop faults with age and mileage. Shift actuator, hydraulic pump, and related sensor components are among the most commonly reported issues on the GS 990. Manual SM5 models avoid these problems entirely.

Cooling system: The V-twin engine generates significant heat, particularly in slow-speed urban riding. Radiator hoses, thermostat assemblies, and coolant pumps are periodic replacement items, especially in warm climates.

Front brake and suspension: The twin front wheels each carry individual brake and suspension assemblies. Front caliper rebuilds, brake pad and rotor replacements, and shock absorber service are routine maintenance. The unique twin-front-wheel geometry means these components see different wear patterns than conventional motorcycles.

Bodywork and panel damage: The Spyder's wide front end is vulnerable to parking lot damage, curb contact, and low-speed maneuvering scrapes. Front fender panels, lower fairings, and front bumper components are frequently replaced.

Electrical system complexity: The GS 990's Vehicle Stability System, ABS, traction control, and (on SE5 models) electro-hydraulic transmission rely on numerous sensors and ECUs. Electrical connector corrosion, sensor faults, and module failures increase with age on these 12+ year old machines.

Belt drive maintenance: The final drive belt requires periodic inspection and replacement. Belt replacements are a routine maintenance item.

Commonly replaced Spyder GS 990 parts

  • SE5 transmission actuator and hydraulic components
  • Front brake pads and rotors (both wheels)
  • Front suspension shocks and bushings
  • Bodywork and front fender panels
  • Drive belt
  • Coolant hoses and thermostat
  • VSS sensors and electronic modules
  • Battery

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does the Spyder GS 990 share parts with the Spyder F3?

No. The GS 990 uses a 998cc V-twin engine while the F3 uses a 1330cc triple-cylinder. Different engines, different frame generations, different bodywork. No meaningful parts interchange exists between the two.

Q: Does the Spyder GS 990 share parts with the Spyder ST?

The Spyder ST (2013-2016) used the same 998cc V-twin engine family. Engine internals may cross over between the GS and ST. The chassis evolved between generations, so frame and bodywork components differ.

Q: Is the SE5 (semi-automatic) or SM5 (manual) more reliable?

The SM5 manual transmission is mechanically simpler and avoids the electro-hydraulic shifting system that is the GS 990's most commonly reported issue. The SE5 semi-automatic offers easier operation but introduces complexity. If transmission reliability is a priority, the SM5 manual is the more dependable choice.
