Used Excelsior-Henderson Parts
Replacement components for the 1999-2000 Excelsior-Henderson Super X are among the rarest items in our Odessa, Florida salvage facility. Sun Coast Cycle Sports technicians inspect, photograph, and assign individual SKUs to every part before listing, and each piece ships free within the United States. With fewer than 1,950 Super X motorcycles produced during the company's brief two-year manufacturing run, the pool of donor machines is extremely limited and shrinking. There is no factory parts department, no authorized dealer network, and no aftermarket catalog dedicated to this platform. Salvage remains the most viable source for original equipment hardware, and when a component appears in our inventory, it typically will not be restocked once sold.
Excelsior-Henderson model overview
The original Excelsior and Henderson brands were among the dominant names in American motorcycling during the 1910s and 1920s. Bicycle magnate Ignaz Schwinn purchased Excelsior in 1911 and acquired the Henderson brothers' inline-four company in 1917, combining them under one umbrella. The Excelsior Super X V-twin and the Henderson Four became landmark machines, but Schwinn shut down motorcycle production in 1931 as the Great Depression gutted demand. The names went dormant for nearly seven decades.
In 1993, Minnesota brothers Dan and Dave Hanlon founded what became the Excelsior-Henderson Motorcycle Manufacturing Company with the goal of building an American cruiser to compete directly with Harley-Davidson. They constructed a 160,000-square-foot factory in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, capable of producing 10,000 units per year, and built a dealer network of approximately 140 locations across the United States. The sole production model, the Super X, reached dealers in early 1999. By December of that year, overwhelmed by cash flow problems, aggressive competition from Harley-Davidson, and difficulty securing additional investment, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A Florida-based investment group purchased some assets but failed to restart production, and the company was fully liquidated in 2002. In 2020, Indian manufacturer Bajaj acquired the Excelsior-Henderson intellectual property, though no new production has followed as of this writing.
Models and year compatibility guide
| Model | Years | Engine | Platform notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super X (Standard) | 1999-2000 | 1,386cc air-cooled 50-degree V-twin, DOHC, four valves per cylinder, EFI | The only production model Excelsior-Henderson manufactured. The proprietary engine was derived from a Weslake Engineering (England) design purchased in 1994, then redesigned with larger bore and stroke for the American cruiser application. Fuel injection via Sagem MC1000 engine management (same ECU platform used on Triumph and Aprilia motorcycles of the era). Five-speed transmission sourced from an established OEM gearbox supplier. Leading-link front fork with triple headlight styling borrowed from the original 1920s aesthetic. All approximately 1,950 units share the same fundamental frame, engine, and drivetrain platform, with variations limited to color schemes, accessories, and minor assembly-line revisions. Several control components were sourced from mainstream suppliers: Nissin brake master cylinders, handlebar switches shared with Kawasaki and other Japanese brands. |
| HCXT Touring Limited Edition | 2000 | 1,386cc air-cooled 50-degree V-twin, DOHC, four valves per cylinder, EFI | Factory touring variant introduced for the 2000 model year. Mechanically identical to the standard Super X with the same engine, frame, and drivetrain. Distinguished by factory-installed touring accessories including saddlebags, windshield, and different finish options. Carried a separate model designation and VIN prefix. Produced in very small numbers before the factory closure. All engine, transmission, and chassis components interchange with the standard Super X. |
Common failure points and frequently replaced components
Transmission lockup and gear wear: The five-speed gearbox is the most documented mechanical issue on the Super X. Excessive oil clearances on gears and shafts from the factory accelerated wear on some units, causing the C-clip retainer to come off and allowing gears to shift on the output shaft. In rare cases this caused full gearbox lockup and rear wheel seizure. Excelsior-Henderson engineers were working on solutions when the factory closed. Post-production service procedures developed by the owner community address these clearance issues, and most long-term owners have rebuilt their transmissions at least once, typically around the 25,000-30,000 mile mark.
Oil system overheating: The air-cooled V-twin runs hot, particularly in slow traffic and warm climates. The original ECU calibration was not optimized for sustained low-speed operation, contributing to elevated oil temperatures. Atlantic Excelsior-Henderson (a specialist parts and service operation) developed an aftermarket ECU calibration that mitigates much of the overheating behavior. An oil line restrictor in the factory configuration limits flow to the stator/alternator; some owners remove it to improve cooling to the alternator at the expense of reduced oil pressure to the engine. Replacement alternators are available through specialist suppliers.
Air cleaner bracket failure: The bracket supporting the air cleaner and throttle body assembly between the engine and intake components is prone to cracking from vibration. An early factory installation procedure pre-stressed the bracket incorrectly. Once cracked, the assembly drops onto the intake manifold seals, causing vacuum leaks and lean running conditions. The fix involves relieving the pre-stress by loosening and retorquing the throttle body bracket bolts in sequence.
Fuel system O-ring degradation: The O-rings in the fuel pressure regulator deteriorate when exposed to ethanol-blended gasoline, which was not prevalent when the Super X was designed. Degraded O-rings cause fuel delivery inconsistencies, surging, and cutting out under load. Replacement with ethanol-compatible O-ring material resolves the issue. Crank angle sensor failures have also been documented as a cause of no-start conditions.
Rear wheel bearings and stator: Rear wheel bearings wear faster than expected and require periodic replacement. The stator is a known failure item, particularly on bikes ridden in hot conditions, as heat degrades the winding insulation over time. Replacement stators are available from specialist suppliers who have reverse-engineered the original unit.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Are any Super X parts shared with Harley-Davidson or other American cruisers?
The Super X engine, frame, and drivetrain are entirely proprietary and share no components with Harley-Davidson. However, many ancillary parts were sourced from mainstream suppliers. The brake master cylinders are Nissin units shared with multiple Japanese and European brands. Handlebar switches come from the same OEM that supplied Kawasaki and early Victory models. Kuryakyn wide-blade lever sets for the Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 (part number 7427) fit the Super X directly. Engine management was via the Sagem MC1000, also used on contemporary Triumph and Aprilia motorcycles.
Q: How many Super X motorcycles were produced?
Excelsior-Henderson produced approximately 1,950 total units across the 1999 and 2000 model years. That figure includes roughly 1,161 units in 1999, 720 in 2000, plus a small number of prototypes, dealer promotional units, and non-retail machines. Production ceased when the factory filed for bankruptcy in December 1999, though some 2000 model year bikes were completed from existing parts inventory before the final shutdown.
Q: Where can I find service information for a Super X?
XH Motorcycles (xhmotorcycles.com) maintains the official post-production technical resource, including the factory service manual, rider's handbook, post-production service repair guidelines, and tech tips compiled by the owner community over 25 years of operating these machines. The Excelsior-Henderson Riders Club (ehridersclub.com) has connected over 500 owners and remains an active peer support network.
Q: Is the Super X reliable enough for regular riding?
Owners who have addressed the known issues (transmission rebuild, ECU calibration, fuel system O-rings, air cleaner bracket fix) report the Super X is capable of sustained highway cruising at 80-90 mph while returning approximately 45 mpg. Several owners have documented mileage exceeding 60,000-80,000 miles. The machine requires a mechanically inclined owner or access to a specialist shop, but once sorted it performs well as a heavy cruiser.
