Used Blast Parts

Sun Coast Cycle Sports stocks used OEM parts for the 2000-2010 Buell Blast, the entry-level single-cylinder motorcycle that served as Harley-Davidson's primary rider education platform. Powered by a 492cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine derived from half of a Sportster 883, the Blast weighed approximately 360 pounds dry and was produced in large numbers for Harley's "Rider's Edge" new rider instruction programs. While many Blasts lived their lives as training bikes, the model also attracted new riders and commuters. Each part is inspected, cataloged with a unique SKU, and ships from our Florida facility.

Blast generation and parts compatibility

The Blast was produced from 2000 through 2010 with minimal changes across its production run. The 492cc single-cylinder engine, five-speed transmission, and belt final drive remained consistent throughout. The Blast's engine is unique within the Buell lineup and does NOT share internal components with the Sportster-derived V-twin engines used in the tube-frame models (S1, S2, S3, M2, X1) or the XB platform (XB9, XB12). Some clutch components cross over with tube-frame Buells, but engine internals are Blast-specific.

The Blast's frame is a unique steel design that shares nothing with other Buell models. Bodywork, suspension, brakes, and electrical components are all Blast-specific. Given the large number of Blasts produced (primarily for rider education), used parts availability remains relatively good compared to other discontinued Buell models.

Common Blast failure points and replacement parts

Carburetor issues: The Blast uses a Mikuni carburetor that can develop idle and starting problems if not maintained, particularly on bikes that sit unused for extended periods (common with training fleet bikes). Carburetor cleaning or rebuild is a frequent service item.

Exhaust gasket deterioration: The exhaust header gasket can fail over time, causing exhaust leaks and ticking noises at the cylinder head junction.

Battery drain: The Blast's relatively simple charging system can allow battery drain on bikes that sit for weeks between use. A battery maintainer is recommended for intermittent riders.

Commonly replaced Blast parts

  • Carburetor and rebuild kits
  • Exhaust gaskets and header
  • Battery and charging components
  • Brake pads and rotors
  • Belt drive and tensioner
  • Bodywork and plastics
  • Seat and footpeg assemblies
  • Mirrors, controls, and switchgear

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does the Blast share parts with other Buell models

Very few. The Blast's 492cc single-cylinder engine is unique and shares no internal components with the Sportster-derived V-twins used in other Buells. Some clutch friction plates may cross over with tube-frame Buells, and a few generic hardware items may be common, but the Blast is essentially its own platform. Other Buell models are not useful as parts donors for a Blast.

Q: Is the Blast engine related to the Harley Sportster

The Blast engine was originally conceived as half of a Sportster 883 engine, but it evolved into its own design during development. While it shares some conceptual DNA with the Sportster, the Blast engine is a standalone single-cylinder unit with its own unique parts. Sportster engine components do not fit the Blast.

Q: Why are Blast parts easier to find than other Buell parts

The Blast was produced in much larger numbers than other Buell models, primarily to supply Harley-Davidson's nationwide rider education program. Many of these training bikes were eventually retired and entered the salvage market, providing a larger pool of donor bikes for used parts compared to the more limited-production Buell sport models.
