Used Burgman 650 Parts

Sun Coast Cycle Sports stocks used OEM parts for the Suzuki Burgman 650 (AN650), Suzuki's flagship maxi-scooter produced from 2003 to 2018 for the US market (2002 internationally). Built around a 638cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel-twin engine and an electronically controlled CVT, the Burgman 650 was the largest-displacement scooter sold in North America for most of its production life. Known as the Skywave 650 in Japan, it was offered in both standard and Executive trims before the Executive became the sole configuration from roughly 2009 onward. Each Burgman 650 part we list is pulled from a donor unit, verified by our technicians, photographed individually, and shipped from our Florida warehouse.

Burgman 650 generation and parts compatibility

GenerationYears (US)EngineKey differences
Gen 12003-2012638cc DOHC parallel twin, FI, 54 hp5-speed eCVT (6th OD added 2005+), standard and Executive trims, solid brake rotors. No US model for 2010.
Gen 22013-2018638cc DOHC parallel twin, FI, 54 hpRevised CVT with 35% less drag, floating brake rotors, slimmer bodywork, ABS standard, eco display, improved fuel economy

The Gen 1 and Gen 2 Burgman 650 share the same fundamental engine and frame, but enough changed in the 2013 update to create meaningful parts differences. The 2013 revision introduced floating brake rotors replacing the earlier solid discs, a revised CVT with new clutch design and reduced transmission drag, updated fuel injection mapping, a slimmer seat rail (25mm narrower), repositioned pillion footboards, and entirely new bodywork. Electrical connectors and the instrument cluster also changed. For practical purposes, Gen 1 and Gen 2 bodywork, brakes, and electronics are not interchangeable, though many engine internals remain compatible.

Within Gen 1 (2003-2012), there are notable year-to-year differences. The 2003 model lacked the 6th overdrive gear, MPG display, and outside temperature reading that 2004+ models received. The Executive trim (from 2004 in Canada, 2007 in the US) added ABS, a multi-mode transmission, electric windscreen, retractable mirrors, and a 500-watt alternator. After 2008, only the Executive version was available in most markets. Standard and Executive models differ in wiring harness complexity, brake hardware (ABS vs. non-ABS), and accessory-specific components.

The Burgman 650 shares no parts with the Burgman 400. Despite both being Burgman-branded Suzuki scooters, the 650 uses a parallel-twin engine with an electronically controlled CVT featuring manual shift capability, while the 400 uses a single-cylinder engine with a conventional belt CVT. Different frame, different wheels, different bodywork, different everything.

Common Burgman 650 failure points and replacement parts

CVT belt and pulley wear: The Burgman 650's electronically controlled CVT is the single most discussed maintenance concern for this model. The CVT belt is a wear item with a typical service life in the range of 40,000-60,000+ miles depending on riding style, with some owners reporting 80,000+ miles before replacement. The primary pulley stopper bolt and pulley bearings are also wear points. Early models (2003-2008) saw more CVT-related failures than later production. The Gen 2 (2013+) CVT was revised for reduced drag and improved durability. Critically, CVT service on the 650 requires significant disassembly (effectively removing the engine), making preventive maintenance of the CVT air filter essential to avoid premature belt and component wear from heat buildup.

Sidestand cutout switch contamination: The sidestand safety switch on the Burgman 650 is positioned where it collects road debris, which can cause intermittent engine cutouts or force the transmission into incorrect modes. Owners report the scooter cutting out at random while riding or behaving erratically in its gear selection. Cleaning or bypassing the switch (with appropriate safety awareness) is the common forum-documented fix.

Front wheel bearing failure (2003): The 2003 model year had a known recall for defective front wheel bearings that could cause the wheel to wobble or separate from the forks. This was addressed under Suzuki recall campaign for early AN650 production. Any 2003 model should have had this addressed, but verify if purchasing used.

Ignition switch failure (2003-2005): Suzuki recall campaign 2082 (NHTSA 05V372000) covered early Burgman 650 models alongside the AN400 for ignition switches that could arc internally and fail, potentially stalling the engine while riding.

Brake light switch failure (2012): NHTSA Campaign 12V038000 affected 2012 AN650 models. Failure of the lever-mounted brake light switches prevents the scooter from starting and eliminates brake light illumination while riding.

Tappet and camshaft wear (2013-2014): NHTSA Campaign 16V009000 covered 2013-2014 Burgman 650 models (along with V-Strom 650 and SFV650) for contaminated cylinder head assemblies. Contaminants between tappets and cams caused the hardened tappet surface to peel, leading to excessive valve clearance and potential engine damage. 1,070 Burgman 650 units were affected. Suzuki dealers inspected and replaced tappets and camshafts as needed.

Underframe corrosion: The Burgman 650's steel subframe and underbody components are susceptible to corrosion, particularly in regions with road salt or high humidity. Rust on the chassis and structural members is a known concern on Burgman owner forums. Inspect any used example carefully for frame corrosion before sourcing parts.

Commonly replaced Burgman 650 parts

  • CVT belt, pulleys, and stopper bolt
  • Sidestand cutout switch
  • Body panels and fairings (very expensive after tip-overs due to full plastic coverage)
  • Windscreen and windscreen motor (Executive models)
  • Brake pads and rotors
  • Rectifier/regulator
  • Mirrors and retractable mirror motors (Executive)
  • Ignition switch assembly
  • Battery and starter relay

Frequently asked questions

Q: Are Burgman 650 standard and Executive parts interchangeable

The engine, frame, and basic chassis components are shared between standard and Executive trims within the same production years. However, the Executive adds ABS brake hardware, a more complex wiring harness for powered accessories (electric windscreen, retractable mirrors, heated grips/seats), and a different instrument cluster with multi-mode transmission controls. Non-ABS brake components from a standard model will not directly swap onto an Executive without modifications.

Q: Will 2003-2012 Burgman 650 bodywork fit a 2013-2018 model

No. The 2013 redesign changed the bodywork profile significantly, with a slimmer overall shape, revised seat rail dimensions, and different mounting points. Gen 1 and Gen 2 fairings, side panels, and trim pieces are not cross-compatible.

Q: Can I use Burgman 400 parts on a Burgman 650

No. The Burgman 400 and 650 are entirely separate platforms with different engines (single vs. twin), different transmissions (conventional belt CVT vs. electronically controlled CVT), different frames, and different bodywork. Nothing mechanical interchanges between the two models.
