Sun Coast Cycle Sports stocks inspected used parts for the 2015-2018 BMW R1200RS, the sport-touring boxer that combines the liquid-cooled Wethead engine with a half fairing, clip-on handlebars, and sportier ergonomics than the upright R1200R. The RS revived a classic BMW designation for riders who want the boxer twin's character with a sport-touring riding position. Every component from our R1200RS donors is assessed at our Florida shop, photographed under a unique SKU, and listed with free shipping throughout the continental U.S.
R1200RS generation and parts compatibility
| Years | Engine | Power | Key Features |
| 2015-2018 | 1170cc liquid-cooled boxer (Wethead), DOHC | 125 hp | Half fairing, sport-touring ergonomics, ride modes, ABS Pro, optional ESA |
The R1200RS uses the same Wethead liquid-cooled engine as the 2013-2018 R1200GS, 2014-2018 R1200RT, and 2015-2018 R1200R. Engine internals interchange across all these models. The RS shares its frame architecture with the Wethead R1200R, with model-specific bodywork (half fairing, windscreen, seat, handlebars) distinguishing the sport-touring RS from the naked R.
The R1200RS does NOT share parts with the earlier R1100RS (1993-2005) or R1150RS (2001-2005), which used Oilhead engines in a completely different chassis. The RS name was revived for the Wethead generation after being absent from BMW's lineup for a decade.
The R1200RS was succeeded by the R1250RS in 2019, which uses the 1254cc ShiftCam engine. No engine internals interchange between the R1200RS and R1250RS.
Common R1200RS failure points and replacement parts
Final drive and driveshaft: Same shaft-drive concerns as all R1200 boxers. Regular final drive oil changes and driveshaft spline lubrication are essential maintenance.
Half fairing wind management: Some riders find the stock windscreen creates turbulent airflow at certain heights, causing helmet buffeting at highway speeds. The RS's half fairing provides less overall wind protection than the RT's full fairing but significantly more than the naked R. Aftermarket windscreen options of different heights, curvatures, and profiles resolve buffeting for most riders. The stock screen is adjustable through a limited range.
Throttle body synchronization: The twin throttle bodies require periodic balancing for smooth idle and power delivery. Out-of-sync throttle bodies cause a lumpy idle, uneven exhaust sound, and hesitation at low RPM. A TwinMax or equivalent electronic synchronizer tool is used to balance the two cylinders during routine service.
Clutch throw-out bearing: The dry clutch on R1200 boxers uses a throw-out bearing that can develop noise at higher mileage. A grinding sound when pulling the clutch lever indicates bearing wear. Replacement requires gearbox removal.
Coolant system (Wethead): The liquid-cooled boxer requires standard coolant maintenance. The small radiators flanking the cylinders are exposed to road debris and should be inspected for damage and clogging.
Alternator belt: Same belt-driven alternator as all R1200 boxers. Periodic inspection and replacement at recommended intervals.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Does the R1200RS share parts with the R1200R?
Yes, extensively. The Wethead R1200RS (2015-2018) and R1200R (2015-2018) share the same engine, frame architecture, and many chassis components. The RS adds a half fairing, different windscreen, lower handlebars (clip-ons), and a slightly different seat. Engine, suspension, brakes, wheels, and electrical components interchange directly between the two models.
Q: Is the R1200RS related to the R1100RS or R1150RS?
Only in name. The R1200RS (2015-2018) uses the liquid-cooled Wethead boxer in a modern chassis. The R1100RS (1993-2005) and R1150RS (2001-2005) used Oilhead air/oil-cooled boxers in an entirely different chassis. No parts interchange between the Oilhead and Wethead RS models.
Q: Will R1200GS or RT engine parts fit my RS?
Yes. The R1200RS, R1200GS (2013-2018), R1200RT (2014-2018), and R1200R (2015-2018) all share the same Wethead liquid-cooled engine. Engine internals interchange across all four models.
