The KTM 990 SMT (Supermoto Travel) is a sport-touring motorcycle produced from 2009 through 2013, combining the LC8 V-twin engine with a supermoto-inspired chassis adapted for long-distance road use. Powered by the same 999cc 75-degree V-twin found in the 990 Super Duke and 990 Adventure, the SMT produces approximately 115 hp with a touring-oriented power delivery featuring milder cam profiles and softer fueling maps compared to the Super Duke. It bridges the gap between KTM's aggressive supermoto machines and conventional sport-tourers. Sun Coast stocks used 990 SMT parts from salvage donors at our Florida facility, where each piece is inspected, photographed individually, and tracked under its own SKU.
KTM 990 SMT generation and parts compatibility
The 990 SMT was produced across a single generation from 2009 to 2013 with no major mid-cycle redesigns. It shares the LC8 999cc V-twin engine with the 990 Super Duke, 990 Adventure, and RC8 (though at different displacements in the RC8's case). Engine internals, particularly the bottom end and rotating assembly, cross between the 990 SMT, 990 Super Duke, and 990 Adventure. However, the SMT uses its own cam profiles, fuel injection mapping, and exhaust system tuned for a broader, more touring-friendly powerband. The chassis is a unique trellis frame specific to the SMT, with 17-inch cast wheels (unlike the spoked wheels on the Adventure), WP suspension calibrated for road touring, and bodywork that includes a small fairing, tall windscreen, and provision for hard luggage. Bodywork, frame, and suspension do not interchange with the 990 Super Duke or 990 Adventure despite the shared engine. The 990 SMT was discontinued after 2013 with no direct replacement; KTM shifted its sport-touring focus to the 1290 Super Duke GT.
Common KTM 990 SMT failure points and replacement parts
Sprag clutch (starter one-way bearing): Like all LC8-powered KTMs of this era, the 990 SMT is susceptible to sprag clutch failure. This presents as grinding during cranking without the engine turning over and is the most commonly cited mechanical issue across the LC8 platform.
Fuel pump and fuel delivery: Intermittent fuel pump failures are documented on the 990 SMT, consistent with the LC8 platform as a whole. Symptoms include hard starting, rough idle at warm temperatures, and sudden power loss at speed.
Voltage regulator/rectifier: The charging system on the 990 SMT can be stressed by the combination of heated grips, GPS, and other touring accessories common on this model. Regulator/rectifier overheating and failure cause progressive battery drain. Aftermarket upgraded regulators are a popular replacement.
Windscreen vibration and fairing hardware: The SMT's small fairing and tall windscreen are mounted on rubber grommets that deteriorate with age and vibration. Loose fairing hardware, cracked mounting tabs, and windscreen buzz are common on higher-mileage examples.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Does the 990 SMT share parts with the 990 Super Duke or 990 Adventure
The engine is shared across all three 990 LC8 platforms, and internal engine components (bottom end, rotating assembly, many valve train parts) cross between them. The camshafts, fuel injection mapping, and exhaust are SMT-specific for the touring power delivery. The chassis, bodywork, suspension, and ergonomics are completely different on each model. The SMT's fairing, windscreen, luggage provisions, and sport-touring frame share nothing with the naked Super Duke or the off-road Adventure.
Q: Was the 990 SMT replaced by another KTM model
The 990 SMT was discontinued after 2013 with no direct replacement. KTM's sport-touring focus shifted to the 1290 Super Duke GT, which uses the newer, larger LC8 1301cc V-twin in a purpose-built sport-touring chassis. Nothing from the 990 SMT fits the 1290 Super Duke GT.
