Used 749 / 999 Parts

This page covers used parts for the Ducati 749 and 999 superbike family, produced from 2003 through 2006. Designed by Pierre Terblanche as the replacement for the iconic 748/916/996 series, these two models share the same trellis frame, bodywork, and the vast majority of chassis components, differing primarily in engine displacement. Both use Ducati's liquid-cooled Testastretta L-twin with desmodromic valve actuation and fuel injection. Sun Coast carries 749 and 999 salvage parts from donor bikes brought through our Florida facility, with each piece inspected, photographed individually, and tracked under its own SKU.

The 749 and 999 share the same frame and bodywork. Fairings, the fuel tank, tail section, and most trim pieces interchange directly between the two models. The engine mounting points are identical, so a 749 engine can physically be swapped into a 999 frame and vice versa. The primary differences are in engine displacement (748cc vs 998cc), rear tire size (180mm on 749, 190mm on 999), and the specific suspension and brake components fitted to each trim level. Base 749 and 999 models use Showa suspension with axial-mount brake calipers, while S models get Ohlins suspension and lighter wheels. Later 999S models received radial-mount brakes, which the base 749 never got (only the 749R had radial Brembos). A mid-production update in 2005 brought revised fairings (identifiable by single air scoops vs. the earlier twin scoops), higher-compression engines with bigger valves on the 749 and 749S, and minor electronics improvements across the range.

The 749/999 shares no parts with the 748/916/996 family that preceded it nor with the 848/1098/1198 that replaced it. These are three distinct platform generations with different frames, engines, bodywork, and electronics.

Common 749 / 999 failure points and replacement parts

Cam belt deterioration: Ducati specifies cam belt replacement every two years regardless of mileage. This is the single most critical maintenance item on any Testastretta engine. A snapped belt causes immediate valve-to-piston contact. Any used 749 or 999 should have documented belt history or receive immediate replacement before riding.

Desmodromic valve adjustment: Valve clearance checks are required every 6,000 miles. Skipping or delaying this service leads to rocker arm wear and eventually hard starting, poor idle, and reduced power. The Testastretta engine is an improvement over the older Desmoquattro in this regard, but it still demands strict adherence to the service schedule.

Regulator/rectifier: Charging system failures are a recurring theme across Ducati models of this era. The OEM regulator/rectifier can overheat, particularly in slow-moving traffic, leading to battery drain and eventual no-start conditions.

Fuel tank rust (internal): The steel fuel tank on the 749/999 is prone to internal corrosion, particularly on bikes that have sat with partial fuel loads. Rust particles can clog the fuel filter and cause lean-running symptoms. Checking the tank interior and fuel filter should be part of evaluating any used 749/999.

Stalling in cold/damp conditions: Owners commonly report cold-start stalling and rough idle in cool or damp weather. The fuel injection mapping on these bikes was calibrated for warmer conditions, and the combination of tight valve clearances and marginal fueling at low temperatures can make cold starts finicky.

Commonly replaced 749 / 999 parts

  • Fairings and body panels (shared between 749 and 999)
  • Cam belts and tensioners
  • Rocker arms (opening and closing)
  • Regulator/rectifier
  • Fuel filter and fuel tank (corrosion)
  • Clutch plates and springs (dry clutch)
  • Brake pads and rotors (Brembo)
  • Fork seals (Showa or Ohlins depending on trim)
  • Mirrors, turn signals, and windscreen

Frequently asked questions

Q: Do 749 and 999 share the same bodywork

Yes. The 749 and 999 use the same frame and bodywork mounting points. Fairings, the fuel tank, tail section, and most cosmetic components interchange directly. The main visual distinction between the two is badging and the rear tire width (180mm on the 749 vs. 190mm on the 999).

Q: Will 749/999 parts fit a 748/916/996 or an 848/1098

No. The 749/999 is a completely separate platform from both the earlier 748/916/996 Tamburini-era bikes and the later 848/1098/1198 family. All three generations use different frames, engines, bodywork, and electronics. Nothing interchanges between them.

Q: What changed on the 2005 749 and 999 models

The 2005 update brought revised fairings (single air scoops replacing the earlier twin scoops on the lower fairing), higher-compression engines with larger valves on the 749 and 749S (boosting power to 108bhp and 116bhp respectively), and minor electronics and wiring improvements. The 2005+ fairing panels are visually different from 2003-2004 panels but bolt to the same frame mounting points.
