Used 848 / 1098 / 1198 Parts

This page covers used parts for the Ducati 848, 1098, and 1198 superbike family, produced from 2007 through 2013. These three models replaced the 749/999 generation and share an extremely high degree of parts compatibility, with identical bodywork, nearly identical frames, and shared suspension, brake, and exhaust components across the range. All use Ducati's Testastretta Evoluzione L-twin engine with desmodromic valve actuation and fuel injection. Sun Coast carries 848, 1098, and 1198 salvage parts from donor bikes processed at our Florida facility, each one inspected by our technicians, individually photographed, and cataloged with its own SKU.

The 848, 1098, and 1198 share an exceptional amount of parts compatibility. The bodywork, including the fuel tank, fairing panels, and tail section, is identical across all three models and interchanges directly. The trellis frames are the same between the 1098 and 1198, and nearly identical to the 848 frame, with the primary difference being a steering damper mount present on the 1098/1198 frame but absent on the early 848 (the 848 Evo added it). Rear suspension linkage, shock mounting, and exhaust canister components are shared. Brake calipers on the 1098/1198 are Brembo monoblock units; the first-generation 848 used smaller calipers, but the 848 Evo upgraded to the same monoblock design. The most important mechanical distinction is the clutch: the 848 (all years) uses a wet clutch, while the 1098 and 1198 use Ducati's traditional dry clutch. This means clutch components, engine covers on the clutch side, and related hardware do not interchange between the 848 and its larger siblings.

This platform shares no parts with the earlier 749/999 or the Tamburini-era 748/916/996/998 superbikes. It also does not interchange with the Panigale (1199/899 and later) that replaced it starting in 2012, which moved to a monocoque chassis and the Superquadro engine. The Streetfighter 1098 and Streetfighter 848 share the same engines and many mechanical components with their superbike counterparts, but use different bodywork, handlebars, and subframes.

Common 848 / 1098 / 1198 failure points and replacement parts

Cam belt service and valve adjustment: Like all desmodromic Ducati engines, the Testastretta Evoluzione requires cam belt replacement every two years (regardless of mileage) and valve clearance checks at Ducati's specified intervals. A broken cam belt causes catastrophic valve-to-piston contact. Any used example should have documented belt history.

Rectifier/regulator (all models): The charging system on the 848/1098/1198 is a known weak point. The OEM rectifier/regulator can overheat and fail, leading to battery drain and eventual no-start conditions. Aftermarket MOSFET-type replacements are a widely adopted upgrade across the community.

Rear shock linkage bearings: The rear suspension linkage bearings on these bikes are known to wear and corrode, particularly on bikes ridden in wet conditions or stored improperly. Worn linkage bearings cause vague rear suspension feel and can be felt as play when pushing the bike. This is a common find on used examples.

Starter motor and sprag clutch: Starter motor failures and sprag clutch (one-way bearing) issues are documented across the 1098 and 1198, typically presenting as a grinding noise on start-up or the starter spinning without engaging the engine.

848 wet clutch slave cylinder: The 848's hydraulic wet clutch uses a slave cylinder that can develop leaks over time, leading to poor clutch disengagement and difficulty finding neutral.

Commonly replaced 848 / 1098 / 1198 parts

  • Fairings and body panels (identical across all three models)
  • Cam belts and tensioners
  • Rectifier/regulator
  • Clutch plates, basket, and slave cylinder (wet clutch on 848, dry clutch on 1098/1198)
  • Starter motor and sprag clutch
  • Rear suspension linkage bearings
  • Brake pads and rotors (Brembo)
  • Exhaust canisters and catalytic converters
  • Mirrors and turn signals (high crash-damage rate)

Frequently asked questions

Q: Do 848, 1098, and 1198 share the same bodywork

Yes. The fuel tank, fairing panels, and tail section are identical across all three models and interchange directly, right down to the same part numbers in many cases. This is one of the highest-compatibility superbike families Ducati has produced.

Q: What is the main mechanical difference between the 848 and the 1098/1198

Beyond displacement, the most important difference for parts buyers is the clutch. The 848 uses a wet clutch, while the 1098 and 1198 use a dry clutch. This means the clutch assembly, right-side engine cover, and associated components are not interchangeable between the 848 and its larger siblings. Everything else, including bodywork, frame, rear suspension, brakes (on 848 Evo), and most electrical components, is shared.

Q: Will 848/1098/1198 parts fit a Panigale 1199 or 899

No. The Panigale (2012-onward) moved to a completely different monocoque aluminum chassis and the Superquadro engine. Nothing from the 848/1098/1198 trellis-frame platform interchanges with any Panigale model.
