Used Africa Twin Parts

Honda revived the Africa Twin name in 2016 with the CRF1000L, a ground-up redesign unrelated to the original XRV650/XRV750 V-twin Africa Twins sold in Europe from 1988 to 2003. The modern Africa Twin uses a 270-degree crank parallel-twin engine (998cc in 2016-2019, enlarged to 1,084cc from 2020 onward) with optional Dual Clutch Transmission, making it the only adventure motorcycle available with DCT. Sun Coast Cycle Sports carries inspected used Africa Twin parts at our Florida facility, with each component photographed and tracked under an individual SKU. Note that the original XRV650/XRV750 Africa Twins were never sold in the US market and are not covered on this page.

Africa Twin generation and parts compatibility

GenerationYearsEngineKey differences
CRF1000L Gen 12016-2017998cc parallel twin, 94hpCable throttle, basic HSTC traction control, no riding modes. Adventure Sports not yet available.
CRF1000L Gen 22018-2019998cc parallel twin, 94hpRide-by-wire throttle, three riding modes, updated HSTC, restyled bodywork. Adventure Sports variant introduced (larger tank, longer suspension travel).
CRF1100L Gen 12020-20231,084cc parallel twin, 100hpNew engine, lighter frame (6kg reduction), six-axis IMU, cornering ABS, wheelie control. Adventure Sports ES adds Showa EERA electronic suspension.
CRF1100L Gen 22024+1,084cc parallel twin, 100hpIncreased compression (10.5:1), 7% more torque at lower RPM, refined DCT, redesigned front fairing, tubeless tires on base model.

The most critical compatibility divide is between the CRF1000L (2016-2019) and CRF1100L (2020+). These are fundamentally different platforms: the engine grew from 998cc to 1,084cc with a new bore/stroke, the frame was redesigned and lightened, the electronics architecture changed completely (the 2020+ uses a six-axis IMU), and the bodywork dimensions differ. Parts do not interchange between CRF1000L and CRF1100L generations. Within the CRF1000L range, 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 share the same engine block and frame, but the 2018 update introduced ride-by-wire throttle, different ECU, and restyled bodywork. Engine internals cross between 2016-2019. Within the CRF1100L range, 2020-2023 and 2024+ share the basic engine architecture but the 2024 has a higher compression ratio, revised valve timing, and new ECU mapping. The Adventure Sports variant uses the same engine as the standard model but has a larger fuel tank (6.5 gallons vs 5.0), longer-travel suspension, taller windscreen, and different fairing. Engine parts interchange between standard and Adventure Sports within the same year range, but bodywork, tank, windscreen, and suspension components do not. Manual transmission and DCT models use different cases, clutch assemblies, and left-side controls, so transmission-related parts cannot cross between the two.

Common Africa Twin failure points and replacement parts

DCT shift quality complaints (2016-2019): Early DCT software calibration was criticized for abrupt shifts at low speed, particularly in first and second gear. Honda addressed this with ECU updates in 2020 and further refinements in 2022 and 2024. The hardware itself is reliable, but owners of early models who did not receive the software update may notice jerky low-speed behavior.

Windscreen cracking and vibration: Both the standard and Adventure Sports windscreens are prone to stress cracking at the mounting points, particularly on bikes used off-road where vibration loads are higher. Aftermarket windscreens with thicker material and rubber-isolated mounting hardware are a popular replacement.

Fuel pump (Denso recall, 2019-2020 models): Certain 2019-2020 CRF1100L Africa Twin and Adventure Sports models were included in Honda's broad Denso fuel pump impeller recall. The impeller inside the fuel pump can deform and cause fuel delivery issues, potentially leading to engine stalling. Verify recall completion on any used fuel pump assembly.

Clutch slave cylinder seal (manual transmission models): The hydraulic clutch actuator can develop a slow fluid leak over time, causing the clutch engagement point to shift. Seal replacement is straightforward, and the slave cylinder is accessible without major disassembly.

Crash damage to lower engine guards and skid plate: Because the Africa Twin is frequently used off-road, lower engine protection components (skid plate, crash bars, radiator guards) are among the most commonly replaced items due to impact damage rather than mechanical failure.

Commonly replaced Africa Twin parts

  • Skid plate and engine guards (impact damage)
  • Windscreen (cracking)
  • Crash bars and hand guards
  • Fairings and beak (front fender extension)
  • Fuel pump assembly (recall models)
  • Chain and sprockets
  • Brake pads
  • Pannier mounts and luggage hardware

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will CRF1000L (2016-2019) parts fit a CRF1100L (2020+) Africa Twin?

No. The 2020 update was a comprehensive redesign. The engine, frame, electronics, and bodywork all changed. No mechanical or body parts interchange between the 1000L and 1100L platforms.

Q: Can I swap a manual transmission Africa Twin engine into a DCT model or vice versa?

This is not a practical swap. The DCT and manual transmission models use different engine cases, clutch assemblies, left-side controls, wiring harnesses, and ECU programming. While the internal combustion components (pistons, valves, cams) are shared, the transmission and electronics are entirely different systems.

Q: Do Africa Twin Adventure Sports parts fit the standard model?

Engine and most chassis components are shared within the same year range. The Adventure Sports has a larger fuel tank, taller windscreen, longer-travel suspension, different seat height, and unique upper bodywork. None of those Adventure Sports-specific components are a direct bolt-on fit for the standard model without additional modification.
