Used M109R / C109 Parts

Fourteen years of production with one engine and one basic chassis -- the VZR1800 M109R ran from 2006 to 2019 with only cosmetic and refinement changes, making it one of the most stable platforms in the cruiser segment from a parts standpoint. The heart is a 1783cc liquid-cooled 54-degree V-twin, the largest-displacement engine and largest pistons of any production motorcycle when it was introduced. Sun Coast pulls parts from wrecked M109R and C109R donors as they come through; every part is photographed, assigned an individual SKU, and ships from our Sarasota shop.

M109R generation and parts compatibility

GenerationYearsKey differences
Gen 12006-20096-spoke cast wheels, tachometer mounted on risers, 4-speed manual clutch engagement
C109R variant2008-2010Classic-bar M109R chassis with pulled-back handlebars, chrome highlights; same engine and frame as M109R
Gen 22010-20195-spoke cast wheels, tachometer relocated into instrument cluster, upgraded clutch pack with improved engagement

Bodywork and wheels are not directly interchangeable between Gen 1 and Gen 2 due to the wheel change (6-spoke to 5-spoke) and instrument cluster relocation. Engine, frame, suspension, and drivetrain components cross freely across all years 2006-2019. The C109R uses the M109R engine and frame but with different handlebar risers, controls, and some cosmetic panels -- engine and chassis parts interchange, body and bar-mounted components may not. Aftermarket parts manufacturers typically list all years together, confirming the broad compatibility of structural components.

Common M109R / C109R failure points and replacement parts

Throttle jerk in low gears: The M109R has a well-documented on/off throttle abruptness in 1st and 2nd gear across all years, a product of the aggressive ECU fuel map. This is not a defect but a consistent behavior pattern the community addresses through ECU flashing (BCS Performance is the widely recommended specialist). Not a parts issue but relevant when buying a used example -- the jerkiness is normal, not a sign of engine trouble.

Clutch drag and late engagement (pre-2010): Gen 1 M109R and C109R bikes have a hydraulic clutch that engages near the end of lever travel with little adjustment range. Community consensus on m109riders.com is that this is a factory characteristic of the pre-2010 clutch pack. Suzuki addressed it with an upgraded clutch for 2010 and later models. On pre-2010 bikes, aftermarket clutch springs (EBC is commonly cited) are a documented improvement without a full basket replacement.

O2 sensor wiring (2010+ exhaust work): Gen 1 (2006-2009) US-market M109Rs have no O2 sensors in the exhaust, making pipe swaps straightforward. Gen 2 (2010+) models added O2 sensors. Forum consensus is that O2 sensor elimination requires an ECU tune to prevent check engine codes on later bikes -- relevant when sourcing used exhaust components.

Stator and charging system: While not as acute as the K6/K7 GSX-R issue, M109R owners on m109riders.com document stator failures on higher-mileage examples (typically 30,000+ miles). The stator is accessible without splitting the engine cases but requires removing the left engine cover. Replacement stators from aftermarket suppliers are widely available.

Commonly replaced M109R / C109R parts

  • Clutch pack and springs (pre-2010 engagement improvement)
  • Exhaust system (slip-ons and full systems, aftermarket ecosystem is large)
  • Instrument cluster and tachometer assemblies
  • Front forks and suspension components
  • Stator and charging system components
  • Handlebar risers, controls, and switchgear
  • Wheels (6-spoke Gen 1 and 5-spoke Gen 2 are not interchangeable)
  • Crash bars and frame protection

Frequently asked questions

Q: Do M109R and C109R parts interchange

Engine, frame, and chassis components are fully interchangeable -- the C109R uses the same VZR1800 engine and frame as the M109R. Handlebar risers, bar-mounted controls, and some cosmetic tank and fender panels differ between the two models. The C109R was sold only for 2008-2010; verify which year you have before ordering handlebar or riser-specific components.

Q: Are Gen 1 (2006-2009) and Gen 2 (2010-2019) M109R wheels interchangeable

No. Gen 1 uses a 6-spoke cast wheel and Gen 2 uses a 5-spoke design. The axles and brake rotor mounting are the same, but the wheels are visually and dimensionally different. If you want to change the wheel style, it requires sourcing the matching year-range wheel, not a direct cross.

Q: Is the M109R the same as the Intruder M1800R sold outside North America

Yes. The VZR1800 is sold as the Boulevard M109R in North America, the Intruder M1800R in Europe and Australia, and the Suzuki M1800R in some other markets. All share the same engine and chassis; parts interchange across market variants.
