Used R1100R Parts

Used parts for the 1994-2001 BMW R1100R naked roadster are available at Sun Coast Cycle Sports. The R1100R is the street-naked version of the Oilhead boxer platform, sharing its engine and chassis with the R1100GS but without the adventure-oriented bodywork and longer suspension travel. The R delivers the Oilhead boxer experience in its simplest form: upright bars, minimal bodywork, and the satisfying torque pulse of the air/oil-cooled flat twin. Our Odessa, Florida technicians strip each R1100R donor, photograph every component under a unique SKU, and list it with free shipping throughout the lower 48.

1997-20011085cc Oilhead boxer, SOHC, 5-speed (M97)80 hpImproved M97 gearbox; front brake from R1100RS (dual-disc Brembo)

The R1100R shares its chassis and engine identically with the R1100GS. The two differ only in wheel type (cast alloy on R vs wire-spoked on GS), suspension travel (shorter on R), bodywork (minimal naked vs adventure), and ergonomics (lower seat on R). Frame, Telelever front suspension, Paralever rear swingarm, shaft drive, and all engine components interchange directly between the R and GS.

The R1100R's front brake comes from the R1100RS (dual 305mm discs with 4-piston Brembo calipers), providing better stopping power than the GS's single-disc front. Engine internals interchange across all R1100 models (GS, R, RS, RT), with the GS/R using lower compression (80 hp) and the RS/RT using higher compression (90 hp).

The R1100R was succeeded by the R1150R in 2001, which added the 6-speed gearbox, dual spark plugs, and the 1130cc displacement. The R1150R "Rockster" variant (2003-2005) added bold styling elements. Many R1100R owners prefer the simpler 5-speed, single-spark R1100 for its easier maintenance and more characterful power delivery.

Common R1100R failure points and replacement parts

Fuel surging: Same Oilhead surging issue as all R1100 models. The Techlusion fuel controller is the standard fix, improving part-throttle smoothness dramatically.

Transmission input shaft wear (M97): Same concern as all M97-equipped Oilheads from 1997 onward. Increased transmission noise at higher mileage indicates bearing and shaft wear.

Clutch slave cylinder: The hydraulic clutch slave cylinder is a known wear item that develops leaks over time. Proactive replacement at higher mileage prevents roadside failure.

Final drive spline lubrication: Shaft drive spline maintenance is essential on all BMW boxers. The R's naked design and potential for spirited riding means the splines may see higher stress than a gently ridden touring model.

Switchgear discoloration and degradation: The plastic-chromed switchgear on Oilheads degrades over decades of UV exposure, with the chrome finish peeling and the underlying plastic becoming brittle. Replacement switchgear or aftermarket alternatives address the cosmetic and functional deterioration.

Fuel pump age-related failure: The in-tank fuel pump can fail after 15-20 years of service, causing no-start conditions or intermittent fuel starvation at high demand. Replacement is a standard maintenance item on older Oilheads.

  • Clutch slave cylinder
  • Final drive spline service
  • Fuel pump
  • Switchgear (handlebar controls)
  • Hall effect sensors
  • Exhaust system (aftermarket popular)
  • Seat (comfort upgrades)

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is the R1100R the same as the R1100GS underneath?

Essentially yes. The R1100R and R1100GS share the same engine, frame, Telelever front suspension, Paralever rear, shaft drive, and gearbox. The R has shorter suspension travel, cast alloy wheels (vs wire on GS), different bodywork, and a lower seat height. Mechanically, parts interchange freely between the two models. The R's front brake is sourced from the R1100RS (dual disc) rather than the GS's single disc.

Q: Will R1150R parts fit my R1100R?

Many chassis and bodywork components interchange, as the R1150R is an evolution of the same platform. Engine internals differ (1085cc vs 1130cc, 5-speed vs 6-speed, single vs dual spark). Suspension, brakes, wheels, and most accessories cross over. The R1150R Rockster's distinctive bodywork is specific to that variant.

Q: Should I choose an R1100 or R1150?

The R1100 (5-speed, single spark) is simpler and considered more reliable long-term by many owners. The R1150 (6-speed, dual spark) offers slightly more power, a useful overdrive 6th gear for highway cruising, and incremental refinements. The R1100's ABS II system is simpler and less trouble-prone than the R1150's ABS system. Both are excellent motorcycles; the choice often comes down to whether you prefer simplicity (R1100) or refinement (R1150).
