Used R1150GS Parts

Sun Coast Cycle Sports carries inspected used parts for the 1999-2005 BMW R1150GS, the Oilhead adventure tourer that cemented the GS as the world's most popular adventure motorcycle. The R1150GS upgraded the R1100GS with a 1130cc engine, 6-speed gearbox with a useful overdrive 6th gear, dual spark plugs for improved cold starting and emissions, and incremental chassis refinements. Famously ridden by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on "Long Way Round," the R1150GS Adventure became an icon of long-distance motorcycle travel. Our Florida technicians break down each R1150GS donor, photograph every component with a unique SKU, and ship free across the continental United States.

R1150GS generation and parts compatibility

R1150GS Adventure2002-20051130cc Oilhead boxer, dual spark, 6-speed85 hpABS II or iABS depending on production date

The R1150GS uses a 1130cc version of the Oilhead boxer with dual spark plugs and a 6-speed gearbox, distinguishing it from the R1100GS's 1085cc engine with single spark and 5-speed. While the engine architecture is the same Oilhead family, the bore, pistons, cylinder heads (dual spark), and gearbox internals differ between R1100 and R1150. Some lower-end engine components (crankshaft, oil pump, cam chain) may cross over between R1100 and R1150, but the top end and gearbox do not.

The R1150GS shares its engine with the R1150R, R1150RS, and R1150RT. Engine internals interchange across all R1150 models, though the GS uses a lower-compression tune (85 hp) compared to the RS/RT (95 hp). The R1150GS Adventure is mechanically identical to the standard GS with a larger fuel tank (30L vs 22L), longer-travel suspension, engine guards, and hand protectors.

A critical compatibility concern is the ABS system. Early R1150GS models (through approximately September 2002) used the simpler, more reliable ABS II system (same as R1100 models). Later production R1150GS models switched to the Integral ABS (iABS) with power-assisted servo brakes, which is significantly more complex and expensive to repair. Identifying which ABS system your GS has is important before ordering brake components.

The R1150GS was replaced by the R1200GS in 2004 (Hexhead engine), which is a completely different platform. No engine parts interchange between the Oilhead R1150GS and the Hexhead R1200GS.

Common R1150GS failure points and replacement parts

Integral ABS (iABS) servo module failure (later models): The iABS servo-assisted braking system is the most significant known issue on later R1150GS models. Module failure is expensive to repair (dealer quotes often exceed $2,000-5,000). Symptoms include ABS warning light flashing at 4Hz, loss of power assist, or in worst cases, brake lockup. Third-party ABS module rebuild services are available at lower cost. Many owners of failed iABS systems convert to non-ABS braking. Early R1150GS models with the simpler ABS II system avoid this issue entirely.

Fuel surging: The R1150GS inherits the Oilhead surging tendency at steady part-throttle, though dual spark plugs somewhat reduce the severity compared to the R1100. The Techlusion fuel controller remains the standard fix.

Clutch slave cylinder failure: Same hydraulic clutch slave cylinder vulnerability as all Oilheads. The cylinder can leak, causing clutch engagement issues. Proactive replacement at higher mileage is recommended.

Final drive spline wear: Shaft drive spline lubrication is critical, particularly on the Adventure variant which is often loaded with luggage for long-distance travel, stressing the splines with sustained heavy loads.

Stick coil failure (dual spark): The R1150's dual-spark system uses stick coils rather than the R1100's conventional coil-and-wire setup. Stick coils can fail, causing a misfire on one plug per cylinder. The dual-spark design means the engine will still run on one plug per cylinder if a stick coil fails, but with reduced combustion efficiency.

Telelever ball joint wear: The front Telelever suspension uses a ball joint that develops play over time, causing vague steering feel and uneven tire wear. Inspection and replacement restores precise front-end handling.

Commonly replaced R1150GS parts

  • iABS module (rebuild or non-ABS conversion)
  • Techlusion fuel controller (surge fix)
  • Clutch slave cylinder
  • Stick coils (dual spark ignition)
  • Final drive spline service and seals
  • Telelever ball joint
  • Windscreen (various heights)
  • Crash bars and skid plate
  • Fuel pump (age-related)

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does my R1150GS have ABS II or Integral ABS?

Production date determines the ABS type. R1150GS models built through approximately September 2002 have the simpler ABS II system (non-servo, same as R1100 models). Later production units switched to Integral ABS (iABS) with power-assisted servo brakes. The easiest identification: if you hear a whining servo noise when applying the brakes, you have iABS. If not, you have ABS II. The ABS II system is widely considered more reliable and less expensive to maintain.

Q: Will R1100GS parts fit my R1150GS?

Many chassis and bodywork components interchange between the R1100GS and R1150GS, as the R1150 is an evolution of the same platform. Engine internals differ (1085cc vs 1130cc, 5-speed vs 6-speed, single vs dual spark). Suspension, brakes (ABS type permitting), wheels, bodywork, and many accessories cross over.

Q: Is the R1150GS Adventure different mechanically from the standard GS?

The Adventure shares the same engine, gearbox, and chassis as the standard R1150GS. It adds a larger fuel tank (30L vs 22L), longer-travel suspension, engine guards, hand protectors, and a taller windscreen. All mechanical and engine parts interchange between the standard GS and Adventure. The larger tank and adventure-specific accessories are the only Adventure-exclusive components.
