Used Vintage XS Parts

Sun Coast Cycle Sports stocks used OEM parts for Yamaha XS-series motorcycles, the family of standard and sport-touring bikes that established Yamaha as a major four-stroke manufacturer from 1970 through the early 1980s. The XS lineup includes the XS650 parallel twin (1970-1985), XS750 and XS850 inline triples (1976-1981), and XS1100 inline four (1978-1981). These machines are now sought-after vintage classics with dedicated enthusiast communities. Our technicians inspect every XS part from donor bikes and list them with individual photos from our Odessa, Florida location.

The XS650 Standard and XS650 Special share the same 654cc parallel-twin engine and many chassis components. The primary differences are ergonomic: the Standard has a more upright riding position, while the Special has pullback handlebars, a teardrop tank, and forward controls. Engine parts, electrical components, and most mechanical items interchange between Standard and Special variants. Within the Standard line, mid-1977 brought a significant fork redesign (34mm to 35mm tubes) that affects fork parts compatibility.

The XS750 and XS850 share the same inline-triple engine architecture at different displacements. Many chassis and ancillary components cross between the two, but displacement-specific engine parts (cylinders, pistons) do not. The XS1100 is a standalone inline-four platform sharing no engine parts with the triples or twin, though some minor accessories and controls may be common across the XS family. The XS1100 engine later formed the basis for the XJ1100 Maxim.

Common XS failure points and replacement parts

XS650 cam chain tensioner: The automatic cam chain tensioner on the XS650 can wear, producing a rattling or ticking noise at idle. Aftermarket manual tensioner conversions are a popular upgrade. The cam chain itself may also stretch on high-mileage engines.

XS650 charging system: The XS650's points-based ignition (early models) and CDI ignition (later models) both have age-related failure modes. The stator, rotor, and rectifier/regulator are common replacement items. Many owners have converted to electronic ignition for improved reliability.

XS750/850 second gear issues: The XS750 and XS850 triples have a known weakness in second gear that can develop engagement problems or pop out of gear under load. This was a documented issue throughout production.

XS1100 high-speed wobble: Early XS1100 models had a documented tendency toward front-end wobble at high speeds. Yamaha addressed this with beefed-up triple clamps in later production, and aftermarket steering dampers are a common retrofit.

Universal age-related issues: All XS models are now 40-50 years old. Carburetor deterioration, wiring harness corrosion, rubber component degradation, and general age-related deterioration are expected on any surviving example regardless of specific model.

Commonly replaced XS parts

  • Carburetor rebuild kits and synchronization hardware
  • Cam chain tensioner (XS650) and cam chains
  • Stator, rectifier/regulator, and ignition components
  • Transmission gears (XS750/850 second gear)
  • Exhaust systems and mufflers
  • Fork seals, fork tubes, and suspension components
  • Brake pads, calipers, and master cylinders
  • Wiring harnesses and electrical connectors
  • Seats, tanks, fenders, and side covers

Frequently asked questions

Q: Are XS650 Standard and Special parts interchangeable?

The XS650 Standard and Special share the same engine, transmission, and most mechanical components. The differences are ergonomic: handlebars, fuel tank shape, footpeg positions, and cosmetic trim. Engine parts, electrical components, brakes, and chain drive interchange between the two. Note that mid-1977 brought a front fork redesign that affects fork parts compatibility across both variants.

Q: Do XS750 and XS850 parts cross over?

The XS750 and XS850 share the same inline-triple engine architecture. Many chassis, electrical, and ancillary components interchange between the two. The bore size differs (the 850 is a bored-out 750), so cylinders, pistons, and related engine-specific parts are displacement-specific. Shaft drive components, brakes, suspension, and controls generally cross between both models.

Q: Is the XS1100 related to the XJ1100 Maxim?

The XJ1100 Maxim (1982-1983) uses an engine derived from the XS1100 inline four. Many engine internals cross between the two. The frame, bodywork, and ergonomics differ significantly between the standard/sport-touring XS1100 and the cruiser-styled XJ1100 Maxim.
