Used VL1500LC / C90 Parts

The VL1500 Intruder LC (1998-2004) and its Boulevard C90 successor (2005-2010) are the same liquid-cooled, shaft-driven 1462cc 45-degree V-twin in two naming eras -- carbureted through 2004, fuel-injected from 2005 onward. The fuel delivery change is the most important parts distinction: carb-era and FI-era intake components do not cross. The C90T touring version adds a fairing and saddlebags to the same mechanical base as the standard C90. Sun Coast stocks salvage parts from both Intruder LC and Boulevard C90 donors; each part is tagged with its own SKU and photo before leaving our Florida facility.

VL1500 / C90 generation and parts compatibility

ModelYearsFuel deliveryKey notes
VL1500 Intruder LC1998-2004Carbureted (Mikuni)Original naming; same frame and engine as C90
Boulevard C902005-2008Fuel injected (SDTV)Renamed; FI intake components not compatible with carb-era bikes
Boulevard C90T2005-2010Fuel injectedTouring version; fairing, saddlebags, windscreen are C90T-specific

Frame, engine internals, suspension, brakes, wheels, and shaft drive components are interchangeable across all VL1500/C90 years regardless of carb or FI designation. The fuel system (throttle bodies vs. carburetors, associated wiring, air box) is NOT interchangeable between pre-2005 and post-2005 bikes. C90T fairings and luggage are unique to the touring model and will not fit a standard C90.

Common VL1500 / C90 failure points and replacement parts

Stator and rectifier/regulator failure: The most widely reported chronic issue on volusiariders.com and motorcycleforum.com. The stator windings fail with all three legs shorting to ground -- a pattern seen on both Intruder LC and Boulevard C90 examples. The rectifier/regulator typically fails alongside or shortly after, causing charging system loss. The community-developed "Mod 3" wiring upgrade (documented on the VL1500/C90 Delphi forum) combined with a higher-output aftermarket stator and a Harley-Davidson Dyna rectifier is the widely recommended permanent fix. A failing stator often presents as a dead battery after short rides before total failure.

Clutch slipping under hard acceleration: Reported consistently on volusiariders.com across 2005-2010 C90 models. The hydraulic clutch pack can slip when the bike is pushed hard, particularly in the mid-RPM range. Clutch discs may measure within spec but still slip -- the fix documented by the community is replacement clutch springs (EBC spring kits are commonly cited) rather than a full disc replacement. The clutch also engages near the end of lever travel with no cable adjustment available.

Decompression system and no-crank faults: The VL1500/C90 uses an electric decompression solenoid that holds exhaust valves partially open to reduce starter load. When the decompression cable or solenoid wears, the bike will click the starter relay without turning over. Forum threads on motorcycleforum.com document this as a recurring diagnostic that is frequently misidentified as a starter or battery problem. The decompression cable needs periodic adjustment per the service manual.

Ignition and main fuse box corrosion: The main fuse box on the VL1500 and C90 is vulnerable to water intrusion and corrosion, causing intermittent or total electrical loss. The battery terminal area can also contact the metal battery box and short the system. Both Intruder LC and C90 forums document total electrical shutdown events traced to corroded fuse box contacts or terminal shorts.

Commonly replaced VL1500 / C90 parts

  • Stator (all years -- recurring failure, high demand)
  • Rectifier/regulator (frequently replaced with Harley-Davidson Dyna unit)
  • Clutch springs and clutch pack components
  • Decompression cable and solenoid
  • Fuse box and main relay assembly
  • Shaft drive components (final drive housing, universal joints)
  • C90T fairing panels, windscreen, and saddlebag hardware
  • Carburetors (Intruder LC 1998-2004 only)

Frequently asked questions

Q: Are VL1500 Intruder LC and Boulevard C90 parts the same

For the engine, frame, suspension, and drivetrain -- yes. The VL1500 and C90 use the same 1462cc liquid-cooled V-twin and shaft drive across the entire 1998-2010 production run. Fuel system components (carburetors vs. throttle bodies, air box, associated wiring) are NOT interchangeable between pre-2005 carbureted and post-2005 fuel-injected bikes.

Q: Will C90T fairing and luggage fit a standard C90

The C90T fairing, windscreen, and hard saddlebag mounts are specific to the touring model and require their own mounting points. A standard C90 can accept them with fabrication but they are not bolt-on. If you need C90T-specific bodywork, source it from a C90T donor only.

Q: What is the Mod 3 fix for the VL1500 / C90 charging system

Mod 3 is a wiring upgrade documented on the vl1500/C90 owner forums that reroutes the stator output to reduce heat load on the connector and R/R. It is typically done in conjunction with an aftermarket high-output stator and an upgraded rectifier (often a Harley-Davidson Dyna unit). It addresses the root cause of the widespread stator failure pattern rather than just replacing the failed components with OEM-spec parts.
